Daytona as a Daily
So I purchased a White Dial Ceramic Daytona in February as a watch I would like to hand down to my son someday. While it is a wonderful watch with its history and all, I struggle with wearing it on a regular basis.
Certainly will keep it for years to come, but wondering if it is a good daily, or if I should think about getting something else? I find on a daily basis I wear my Fitbit is like an extension of my wrist, where my Daytona stays in the box... |

Why would you not wear it as a daily?
Unless you have a particularly physical job or one which risks more than normal wear, the Daytona is more than up to the job Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Strap it on and get after it!
My Brother in law has a Daytona (steel bezel) and he daily'd it for a couple years before getting a BLNR. It can always come back looking like new at service time

I wear mine most days. It’s a great daily watch. They are meant to be worn. Any scuffs etc, they’ll come out at service time.

Ask yourself, if it wasn’t the mythical Daytona would you have any qualms about wearing it as a daily? Like, if it was just another expensive watch that you could walk into a jeweler and buy, would that change your feelings? Wear the watch. Don’t let it wear you.
As an aside, my dad and I have both had our Daytonas for the last 6 months. I wear my watches carefully and so mine is still very close to new with minimal swirlies. My dad is just a guy who wears nice watches and if you look closely at his the PCLs are scratched to hell all the way around. But from 3 feet away? It looks perfect. |

As soon as I get the call it'll be on my wrist non-stop as a daily for quite some time.

Genuinely don’t understand the can I wear it daily, in the shower, playing golf etc etc questions. This was dealt with recently on an excellent thread. A Rolex will take pretty much anything you throw at it, but probably not a great watch to wear if you are a truck mechanic or similar.
If you want to hand down to your son at some stage, which I totally get which is why I have 3 of them, the question surely is whether your son will appreciate it more having seen his Dad wear it everyday and knowing you love it, or if you want to baby it and hand down in BNIB condition. I would suggest the former will mean more but I may well be in a minority. Whatever you decide enjoy in good health |

Been wearing my 116500 black as a daily since August 1. At first, I was similarly hesitant. Now, I forget it s there. Go for it!

You really need to wear the watch! If it's going to be handed down to your son, he'd want it well worn by you, as a reminder.

I honestly wish this watch wasn't so hyped. The catch with handing a watch down is that there's no way to guarantee your son will like the watch, appreciate it or wear it himself. It risks sitting in a box for 18+ years and an unknown fate. That's why I'd wear it daily. It should be appreciated today. Tomorrow is unknown. |

My take is wear it daily! I wear all my Rolex, AP, and Patek timepieces daily in rotations. Just did some grocery shopping at Walmart with my 5167a on and the dog park.

so is there a question or request for advice?
Why do you feel it doesn't work as a daily? |

You own a Daytona - but prefer your plastic Fitbit? I don’t get it.
I wear my Daytona C black as a daily. It gets a lot of fingerprints on the pcl’s but other than that it works for me. I have even learned to be relaxed regarding swirls and minor scratches. The watch can take the daily desk diver abuse and more so. |

Philosophical question for you: Does a watch that sits in the safe waiting to become a BNIB inheritance make for a better gift to hand your son or a watch that his father wore every day but has all the scratches to go along with that gift?
Which one is more personalized and would he one day cherish more? |

Any Rolex professional model is suitable as a daily wearer depending on the needs of the owner. You have a waterproof watch made of high grade 904L steel that is classic in design and will last a lifetime. You're good to go.

Excellent post!!!... I just flipped a 116520 because I didn't enjoy wearing it anymore (for multiple reasons), and it had been sitting in a safe for several months. My intention had been to eventually hand it down to my son, but I know that my ambivalence regarding the Daytona would have made the handover anything but exciting. Seeing this response just reaffirms that I made the right decision, and I hope the OP appreciates it as well, regardless of what his final choice is. |

I wore it everyday when it was a 9k watch. I wear it everyday now that it's a 20k watch. lol
Seriously, SS Daytona is built like a Mack truck. Superhard stainless, and that ceramic bezel was designed to be tougher than the SS bezel. By not wearing it you are disappointing the builders and designers. It's purpose is unfulfilled. |
