Should I wait or not?

Hi there.

I am thinking of buying a Rolex Submariner Date, but I have heard that a new Submariner Ceramic-bezel are coming soon.

My quiestions are:
Does someone know for sure what the new sub gonna feature when it comes to movement, design, bracelet and so?

Price?

Release date?

Donīt know if itīs worth waiting??

I went to an AD this weekend in Richmond, VA. One of the salesmen told me indeed it was coming out ( but it is not yet printed on the 2009-2010 catalog).

You'll be waiting a while if you're going to wait for the new SS sub. If you like the current sub, grab it. You can't go wrong.

Don't wait. You are looking at least a year +.

Rumours abound, but just look at the new gold subs and two tone subs. The "Super" larger cases you can count on. Maxi dials & hands...

Big debate is whether or not the new sub bracelet will have polished / shiny center links like the new GMT IICs and the gold /two tone subs.

Price will likely be ~ greater $6K...likely closer to $7K. Prices on used current model subs may go up.

You have a lot to think about ;-)

Conventional wisdom says maxi dial, ceramic insert, updated clasp and bracelet as well as the block case as with the current TTs/WG/ etc.. examples out there.

Release date will be around Bazel next year, but getting to the ADs will be longer.

I have no idea about pricing, but the estemates given sound pretty good.

No one knows for sure what it will be like or the price. it is only speculation.
As to waiting, it depends how desperate you are for a submariner. Or how patient you are.

Option 1: Get current sub now = $6000 - 15-20%.
Option 2: wait a year (at least) for the blingy new model = $7000+ with no discount (for at least another year).
The new "upgrades" are not worth the wait or the extra $$ (possibly >$2000!). Go with the classic! You can be enjoying it TOMORROW and be well on your way to that Datejust that you know that you've been looking at out of the corner of your eye.

I am in a similar situation - I like the sub and the gmt IIc. I am either going to get the gmt IIc now or wait for the new sub. I just really like the look and durability of the ceramic bezel.

Actually...slight mod to Dr. Brian's rec.

Get a pre-owned / mint Sub from a TRF seller for ~$3600 - 4,000. Enjoy the hell out of it for a year +. If you LOVE he new Sub, sell the old one and buy new...or not!!!

I'm waiting...I KNOW it will be worth it. The durabilty of the Ceramic bezel (according to Rolex ads) are a great asset. Plus, it will give me time to save for the price (which doesn't worry me at all). I always wanted a Stainless Steel Sub, so the fact that one will be released with the intent to be more durable, larger and dare I say....cooler, will make it all the more worth it.

I enjoy the anticipation....but I'm also a patient guy, some aren't so willing to be.

I agree with Mike but would add in a brushed bracelet.
I doubt that Rolex will have PCL's on this one.
It will be a beauty but very expensive in Oz, IMO.

like others have said.. if you can afford both. .do it. but if new sub is announced at basel, you probably will not see it an your AD til this time next year... so i would buy a sub now and start saving for the new one.. or at least you have ,if you wish, have something to trade in for 'new" version when you can get one. IMO....

As others have said the price will likely be about $1k higher when the new SS Sub comes out (it went up $1,100 on the TT version) and it may not be discounted initially . . . another factor to consider is that more generally the kind of discounts available now might not be there once the economy picks up, so the new SS Sub might not ever be available at the current discounts.

MSRP on the 116710 (IIc) is $7000. I think the sub will be higher b/c of the glidelock clasp.

I would get the current sub now, it does not get any better. The so called upgrades, are just a way of getting more money out of you, you can't beat the durability and reliability of the current model.

In the same boat as the OP. Must say I'm attracted to the classic look of the Subs and am leaning toward taking the plunge.

Buy a new (current) sub, if you like the new version trade it, if you don't keep it.

I'd buy the current Sub. If I'd been Rolex shopping a few years ago, I'd have gone with a Coke GMT over either the GMT IIc or even the Exp. II I purchased because I really liked the more classic look.

Do you have to have the date? I ask because if not, buy the current no-date. There are rumors (and I'm stressing that they're just rumors) that this piece will go away and if you can afford it, you can end up with two very different watches, a classic Sub no-date and a new ceramic Sub Date (if you even like it).
