How is the availability of Sport Watches in TRF Sales this year?

Since I was not buying watches - nor was I a WIS this time last year, wondering what folks think of Sub, GMT, etc availability is like this year compared to 2008?

Are prices up / down / same?

Certain models scarce / plentiful??

Will also be interesting to see how the secondary marketing changes after Basel / when new models hit ADs...

Here's what I've seen, compared to 2008:

Some pieces are up in price (Sea Dweller, GMT II), some are down in price (DSSD, Exp II), some are holding steady or slightly declining (Sub, GMT IIC).

Nearly all models are now plentiful, and the wait for a Daytona is gone if you do some looking around outside of CA & FL, and have the cash (or plastic) ready to go.

I doubt the secondary market will do anything right after Basel, as it will take 6 months, maybe more, for the watches to hit AD's (based on the past years). Once they do start hitting AD's, it's anybody's guess as to what will happen with the prices.

Some models (like the Sub date) might see a slight dip in price if the used market gets an influx of folks trading in the old for the new, but it's unlikely based on the last few models to come out (DSSD, GMT IIC). Some will even try to capitalize on the 'scare' of "it's no longer in production".

Time will tell.

I bumped into TRF when I was reserching my ND sub late last year...and I have followed some prices..
2ndary market prices have gone up in the last few months...I think we are well off the lows of earlier this year...

I haven't really tracked watch prices but that makes sense to me as it seems like the economy more generally is at least bouncing off the bottom a bit. In the US the November employment numbers were better than anticipated i.e. no further job losses.

Yes. I agree that things could go either way after new product hits the market. Having never experienced that before....it will be interesting.

If the new SS Sub hits / along with say a new GMT IIC color (Pepsi, Coke or???) flavor...things could get interesting.

No one has predicted anything about a Daytona launch...so I guess no major changes there.

We'll be seeing a 42-43mm Daytona in two years or less.

My theory is that Rolex always had plenty of SS Daytona's, but they are clearing out their inventory as the new Daytona's are coming soon.

First, I'm unsure if Rolex USA has raised prices this year or not - this is a major determining factor of secondary market prices.
From what I have observed (for models I would consider):
14060m COSC has been stable at approx $3.4-3.6k mint
16610 is approx $3.8-4k mint (or you get plentiful supply from DAVIDSW BNIB for like $4.7k)
116710 is in abundance in secondary market as people starts to get bored with it. It's possible to find a mint one for < $5k, or get it BNIB from David with a slight premium.
116520 has dropped significantly to the mid-high 8k mark. I've never seen BNIB Daytonas discounted b4 and this is now happening.
What else? DSSD and Milgauss GV are to me, a fad thing.

Agreed on everything but the 42-43 Daytona . I think the days of bigger watches will go away and go back to 36 to 41 mil range in the future . I know a lot of my peers had been wearing bigger AP,Panarai and Zeniths but not so much lately . Have been seeing datejust and leather straps coming out . With people struggling and the economy hurting it is hard to tote around a monster /flashy watch in a management/Sales position. Just my opinion of course and time will tell

Prices are down across the board on the secondary market and any model is easily found if you look for it.

I have heard a rumour from a (apparently) reliable source that a Daytona Date is in the works, but it could just well be conjecture

So now is not the time to get a SS Daytona? I mean if they're going to come out with a new model, the new one might be nicer and if not you can get a better price on the older model.


Please advise. My old man wants to take the plunge into the luxury watch market and likes the Daytona. I'm working on getting him one for Christmas.

If you like the current model / can get it for XMAS, do it. You won't see any new models in retail for 9 + months or so...unless you want to wait until NEXT XMAS!

Figure Rolex raised the prices twice in 2008 (March & Oct), and not at all in 2009. My guess is we'll see a price increase in 2010, probably in the first 1/2 of the year (purely a guess...I don't have a 'secret' source).

If he wants a Daytona, get it now while they're more readily available.
