Should i wait?
Hi all,
I've recently decided that I deserved a fancy new watch. After a couple of weeks lurking on various watch forums, I have become obsessed with all things rolex. The model I want ( and can afford ) is the black ss sub date. Although they seem to be rare now, I have sourced one at an AD here in Ireland offered to me at 10% under the RRP. I'm going to try it on tomorrow. The problem is that by all accounts there is a newer model/version being announced in a few weeks time. I'm caught in two minds over what to do, will i be annoyed with myself in a couple of months time when i see the shiny new version in the shops? I don't think i can hold off though...... Any advice would be appreciated!! |

You got the bug allright...
There's ALWAYS going to be a shiny and newer model, so at some point you have to jump in don't you? SUB is a classic and you can't go wrong.

Models releasing in Basel Fair will not hit the shops until September and will more than likely be more expensive as well. So, get what you can afford now.

Personally I wouldn’t wait; it would be next fall by the time the new line rolls out. If you see something you like now go get it and don’t look back. Once you buy one you will be hooked to buy another. Plus it’s always great to have a new watch during short sleeve weather so you can look at it more.

Just look at the new Two Tone models... The new one will look exactly lilke them except in Stainless Steel..
If that's what you want, wait (and save up a couple thousand more), if not, go for the current one....

The new sub won't really be available until around september, and if you factor in the inevitable "scarcity" issues that drive the new watch prices up, don't count on normal prices until early next year.
In the meantime, you could be enjoying one of the best referrences around - 16610!

I have a Sub (16610) and a GMT IIc (116710LN) and if I could only own one, it would be the sub. Ceramic is cool, but the sub is money!!!! It is lighter and more comfortable IMHO and the clasp (while cheap looking) is SUPER functional. People give it a lot of grief, but it is hidden and does the job perfectly.
10% of RRP is awesome as well. Get it!!!!!

I recently bought a 16610 and I'm so glad I did. My advice is don't wait; think of the months that you could be enjoying it. There's also a chance that you may like the current model better than the new one. Good luck!

I'd go classic. I do look forward to trying the new one though. It's all about the GMT if you're looking for maxi/supercase...IMHO

i was thinking the same thing...Decided to buy the GMT because it was already updated and i dont dive...I would NOT buy a sub now with the new one about to come out. It sounds like you will regret it and want the new one. You WILL lose money on trying to swap your sub for the new style. Some people will try to tell you it will hold its value (im sure to a degree it will) and you might even make money on the deal - NO WAY. Think of all the subs that will be for sale when the new one is released. Im betting a lot of people will be trying to swap their older style for the new and improved version.
If your heart is set on the sub then wait - you will have the newest and best SUB ever made on your wrist by year end. If money is no object buy a solid gold version that has already been updated. Or, if the GMT floats your boat (they are very similar looking) then buy the recently updated SS GMT 2 Ceramic - its a phenomenal watch Good luck

Welcome!
Quote:
Firstly, Welcome to TRF! You'll find all the information, feedback, input, and advice you need to be confident in all things Rolex and WIS (Watch Idiot Savant!). Progress, technology, and products (including watches!) are like a moving train. It's up to you to decide when to hop on! There are advantages and disadvantages e.g. "It'll be cheaper if I get on the train at the next stop and the trip will be shorter!" All true, but then I have to get to the next stop and that takes time, effort, and money of its own! That plus if I've decided that I want to hop on this train, why do I want to wait?! I'm with the "Get it now" crowd. You'll always have a chance to trade up or get the next latest and greatest in the future...that's for sure! The last thought I have is my good friend and neighbor (and fellow Rolex owner, sub date) had an uncle who almost recently died of a heart attack. When he visited him in the hospital, he noticed he had on a brand new Rolex LV Sub! He asked him when/why he had gotten it as he never owned or spoke of a Rolex his entire life. He told him he had his daughter buy it for him (turns out he always wanted one, but was waiting for the "right time!"). He then looked up at my friend with all the tubes, iv's, and heart moniters still attached and said: "Can you believe I almost died with money in the bank?!" Cheers! And let us know what you decide! --Paul

I would say get the GMTIIC because there's been no updates to it for this year's Basel according to our best rumor mill.
But if you like the classic Sub, there's no reason NOT to get it. Get it for keeps. You can always fancy a new Sub at a later date.
