Aftermarket parts and the AD

The only aftermarket part I have on my Exp II would be the fine glass caseback I just had installed. I still have the original back at home in the original box the watch came in. If I took this watch in to an AD to slow it down (gains 10-12 sec. per day) whould they confiscate the caseback and install an original? Or just scold me for using something non-Rolex?

An authorized dealer may not, but I would explain to him the situation first. The RSC would definitely make you replace all non offical rolex parts. And if the watch was stolen they would confiscate it and try to return it to the original owner.

Here is what I think:

Some AD's may stick to the letter and refuse to work on the watch...others won't care.. although most watchmakers themselves would probably be fine with it... Ask to talk to the watchmaker...

Rolex RSC will not force you to do anything - they just refuse service unless you agree to replace the back. They also cannot confiscate your case-back...without their trademark on it (the laws only protect their trademark) they have no more protection stealing your parts than you do theirs..

One AD told me they would change the dial from a Daytona without a problem... other AD almost threw me out of the store for asking how much it would be..... it is all up to them..

Well in the meantime, since I posted this, I took the watch to town this morning, and in about 45 seconds, my favorite generic jeweler de-magnatized it for free, just to see if that slows it down first. They have the equipment and expertise to regulate it, but I might have to leave it for a while. I'll see if by chance it responds to the cheap & easy first.

One thing for sure, that clear case back looks VERY cool on the Exp II!

My AD has a watchmaker they use for watches which the RSC no longer services, and for other brands of fine watches. I dropped my Sub off there recently to have the clear case back re-installed after having it sent back to the RSC for a problem with the winding crown. A couple of days later I stopped into the AD for an unrelated matter, and coincidentally the assistant manager was on the phone with the watchmaker. The conversation went something like this:

Yes, he wants it installed....

Yes, he knows it's not original Rolex....

Yes, he knows Rolex won't work on the watch with it installed....

Because he likes to wear it that way....

So he can see the movement working....

Thank you.

So, I guess it all depends on which AD you deal with.
