ROLEX EXPLORER II vs. MILGAUSS GV
Hi guys. I need your help. I had a Rolex Submarier date,D serial, but I was stolen here in Brazil. Now, I'd like to buy a new one but not sure which model I should go. Before buying the Submariner, Explorer II (white dial) was my favorite Rolex but It was sold out so I purchased the Sub. Now I've heard a lot of people saying GV is the watch!etc... Actually im worried about the GV one becomes like a Submariner green one, I mean, it was one of the most wished Rolex ,much more expensive than the black one and nowadays it becomes even cheaper than the black.
What do u guys prefer?Which one I can wear everywhere...every sittuation...Remember it is gonna be my first Rolex once my Submariner is gone. Please, give me your choice and why that. Thank you so much guys and sorry about my bad english. I hope you undestand it ; ) Ricardo Last edited by Tools; 28 March 2010 at 12:51 PM.. |

Hi Ricardo,
A big welcome to TRF. Sorry to hear about your stolen Sub. Well, since you want to buy another one, the Exp-II makes more sense. It has a date feature and a 24-hour time-zone too..........so it would be a more practical watch for daily wear and travel!! Good luck in your final decision! JJ

Ricardo, welcome to the forum!
I agree with JJ! The Explorer II is definitely more useful! |

You can't go wrong with either!
However, IMO the Explorer II has more functions than the Milgauss (date, 4th hand). Good Luck!

Expy II has more functions but less resale and is generally less popular.
If this is your only Rolex, I guess I'd say ExpyII, but I would choose the GV over the ExpyII any day of the week.

TY Jib and Rick! What about if I buy a Exp II , V serial and the new Exp II (orange hand) comes out next year? Should I loose my investment or the value of my watch will be increased like the GMT coke.. pepsi?
Do you guys think the Milgauss GV is going to be a normal Milgauss like the white and black one with the same price of them? |

Im a GV owner and i love it to death but i have to admit its more of a 2nd watch. Primarily cause it doesnt have a date function and too bling bling hehe. Sub and exp2 are more of an everyday watch

As to GV vs. EXP II, I own both and I would have to say if I was only getting one watch, I would most likely get the EXP II. It (EXP II) is far more versatile and more low key for every occassion. Don't get me wrong, the GV is wonderful, but more unususal. |

I am biased since I just bought an Explorer II but I would go with the Explorer. I am not a huge fan of the GV. But it comes down to what really catches your eye the most. I suggest trying them both on and go with what grabs you. I would also buy the watch based on what you are going to enjoy wearing daily and which watch will make you happy rather than thinking about it as an investment. But that is just my personal opinion.

Both nice watches... but try on the Milgauss first. It may not suit you. I tried it on an it seems to be the biggest 40mm watch I have tried. So I stopped "liking" the Milgauss after that.

I would go with another Sub. They just discontinued the current model and even though it doesn't have a GMT function, it does have the date that the Milgauss doesn't. I mean, all are great choices but if you only have ONE, I think the Sub is the one to get.

Ty all guys! Im really in doubt still. As I said, I tried both on today. The Exp 2 was always my fav Rolex (white dial) but the GV one is the most different watch I've tried. I can't explain how it looked on my wrist. Im a big guy(1,90m)..big arms..etc..
The Exp 2 was more confortable on my wrist and thin as well. The Gv was huuge..different color.. different band .... damn, I need to choose it asap cause I really need a Rolex baby again . LOL I haven't tried the Gmt ceramic but not sure if I would like it. What about the GV prices? Was it going down? Do you guys know the average price of a V serial Exp II brand new? Thank you soo much guys! |

If I were you, I will go for another Sub as it's the basic watch to start with. Once you hv the Sub, then if you want to buy another one, you may think of chossing between Ex II and GV as the second watch.
Between the GV and Ex II, if affordable, I recommend you to hv both in future as they are both the great watches to hv for Rolex lover. Bit if we were to pick, GV is a good choice first and follow with Ex II, to create more variety of yr daily wear, IMHO.

Which one makes you smile? I would still choose the Sub date. IMO it's the most versatile of the 3. Happy hunting!

Ricardo,
for a big guy, I'd recommend the Seadweller or the GV. Heck, maybe even a DeepSea!

TY guys! Actually im not fat big big, I mean, tall ,big bones..etc.. ; )
I tried the GV one yest and as I told before, I've never tried a watch like that. Its totally different from all the sport watches I've had. However, im not sure if it would be my only Rolex.BTW,when i tried the GV then tried after that the Exp 2, the Exp 2 looked like simple one.. sooo light.. thin.. not as robust as the GV one. Im just afraid to get bored wearing the GV all the time. Do you guys like any other model more? I wouldnt buy another Submariner. It was never my fav one. I just bought mine cause the EXP 2 was sold out and the AD seller said the Sub got a good resale value. Have a nice sunday everyone! |

Go for an ExpyII
Hi Ricardo, I am so sorry about your stolen SUB. I agree with all TRF members voting for an EXPY II. As a first ROLEX, It's an everyday/everywhere watch.
I also like the Millgauss GV but I will go for it if it is my 3rd or 4th ROLEX. Good Luck !

I'm sorry to read your Sub was stolen.
However this is a nice problem to have. I think the Milgausse is a second or third watch. the EXPII has more features but it is likely to be replaced next year so the value could suffer. Have you tried on the SS GMTII Ceramic. I would do that before you decided. Alternatively as you want a Rolex now, how about a pre-owned Datejust now. In two years time the new EXPII will be available. You could trade the DJ or keep it. The you would have dress watch and a sports watch. Good luck. What ever you buy, wear in good health. |

not sure why a watch without a date function has become "the second watch" allow a sudden?!?
I'm quite happy to wear my GV or Speedy Pro or any of my other no date watch everyday as my main watch. Back to the topic, between an Exp II and a GV, I'd go with the GV. It is just a more handsome piece IMO. |

Hi Eric. Yes. I also dont consider that point about date or no date. Im considering the style of the watch. Im not sure if I can wear the GV to a sunny sunday.. wearing shirts.. shorts..everywhere like I can do easily with Exp 2.However , I really liked the GV too but im afraid to get bored wering it full time once It is gonna be my unique Rolex at the moment.
Anyway, even if these details u shoud go for GV. Do u? Cheers |

hi Ricardo, IMO the GV can be both dressed up or down.
I have worn it on a sunny Sunday out to an open air theater (yes, it was a rare day in London) as well as a suited dinner event. Since you want an unique Rolex, then GV is the one. IMO GV is a more unique piece than any of the modern Exp II variants. |

Thank you Anders! I think you got it! Exp II have been my favorite sport one forever. However , the GV is like a new stunning girl u just see in the club... Im just in doubt if that "stunning girl" will become just a normal girl or if she will be "THE GIRL" for my whole life ; )
Btw, I like your pics and really prefer the white one for EXP 2. |
