A new "sub level" of Mod needed?

I'm just throwing this out for discussion mind you...I think our Mod staff is the tops...I sing their praises whenever I can. But the attack we had the other night was unbelievable.

I was thinking about a new position here on TRF. Not adding more Mods but creating a position where the person can delete posts. That way if a mod isnt immediately available, the chosen member(s) can spring into action and zap the offending picture or post. They wouldn't be able to ban, to access infraction points nor would they be able to lock threads ...Basically they would be holding down the fort until the Calvary arrives.

Maybe a title like "TRF assistant"...someone who serves at the will and pleasure of Steve and the Mod staff. Their privilege can be stripped for abuse or any other reason Steve deems acceptable.

Like I mentioned, this is just me thinking out loud here for the benefit of us all...not a critique BY ANY MEANS

It would simply be a role of support for Steve and our mods when real life and work take them away from the forum.

After the shocking attack we witnessed, I think it's time to adapt and find strength in numbers.

I am an outdoorphoto.co.za assistant mod and like you say, its an assistant that helps keep the fort down. We can lock threads and ban users, delete posts or photos etc.

Basic ethics dictates how one goes about ones duties as an assistant. These ethics are based on the terms of service.

Depending on how many mods/admins are here on TRF it may or may not be necessary. On a site this size 5 or 6 admins with 15 moderators should work just fine as long as their online time isnt all 8-4 GMT for example.

Using assistants does work but also has its problems if its on an ad-hoc basis. They need to be chosen carefully and they need to make a commitment to the site.

Then again, if it aint broke, dont fix it!

Nice suggestion Allan

It started out with inane post after inane post by the same, brand new member...which blossomed into the poster calling fellow TRF'rs Nazi's and aholes. He was banned...but after the dust settled...he came back about two hours later under a couple of new handles, posting all sorts of perverted and sick pictures and porn. It was anarchy for about an hour until RogerF rode to the rescue.

Good Lord! Maybe members with a certain high post count should be able to temporarily remove posts until mods can restore them if they'd like.

Yikies! Internet is full of all kinds I suppose.

I would just be happy being able to report a thread one after another...rather than waiting SIXTY SECONDS between reports...

That troll was able to post a whole lot of crap in those precious moments... Not being able to flag them faster can make it more difficult to track all those pictures down so the mod's can delete them.

True but you could have trolls reporting post after post if they remove the 60 second rule.

In the overall scheme of things this isolated incident was disposed of with significant expedition.

There are mechanisms in place to deal with the likes of this guy (and there arn't many of those type of guys around anyway).

Lets not get into a panic. In the overall scheme of things this incident was a microsecond in the life of the forum.

When you become as popular as we are here, there is always going to be someone who will try to bring you down. But that is all they are try hard wannabees.

There's generally at least two mods able to react to reported PMs within 60 seconds and the offender is banned with all his history wiped.

Often there will be two or three hands hitting the red button at the same time.

I can recall dozens upon dozens of far worse posts and pictures than Archie the arsehole's arsehole. They are not infamous because they didn't get the airing.

It just happened on this one occasion only one mod was available and even then did not have constant access to the forums therefore it took an hour or so to clear up the mess.

We get literally dozens of exceptionally nasty posts a week which never get past our scrutiny as well as over a hundred which get queued in our automoderator trap.

Those that get past us onto the boards are then well reported. The members catch out everything from a 24 hour sales bump to the full monty.

If there are more instances of such a comparatively long period whereby the vile posts aren't immediately and efficiently zapped with the offender ejected then there will be an argument for us boosting the mod team to cover those times of the day when mod coverage may be less than the level that we feel is appropriate.

You guys don't see a lot of the really bad stuff. Those posts get caught in a holding pen until we can get to them and deep six the posts and the posters.

But as I've said elsewhere, it's the members who are the eyes and ears of TRF. All the good people here contribute to keeping this place the healthy fun site that it is. So you are all to be thanked for your participation and contributions (and not only the financial ones) to TRF.
