Very true. I enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1967. After Boot Camp and Arty School, my pay as a PFC was $96. a month in 1968. So, as Pvt., during 1967, I was making less than that!

The other thing to remember is that today's watches are quite different than the watches from then, even if the resemblance is strong, so even factoring out inflation, the watches of today would more than likely cost more even back then.

In 2007, the base pay for PFC, in the Army, was around $1500 or so(all electronic so I barely looked at my LES.)

You could save for 2 months and get a Sub. And still have some money left over. People in the service now would have to save for a lot longer.

How ironic that the SS-Daytona was cheaper then a SS-Datejust in both strap and bracelet models.

Great info, thanks.

My dad told when I was a kid that he earned about 400 $ per month mid sixties as an engineer for a large industrial group...i.e. more than half a months salary for a simple Sub: The relation is still similar today, maybe even a little bit worse.

Regards
Tom

Daytonas now cost well over 50 TIMES MORE than they did 40 years ago!?!?!?

Please tell me that's just prices on a parts catalog!!!

Let's put this in perspective if other things in 1967 inflated at the rate of 50 x's.

Are rolex watches keeping better time than they were 40 years ago, or carrying out more complicated functions?

Cost of a new home: $24,600.00 x's 50 = $1.23 million

Median Household Income: $7,143.00 x's 50 = $357,150
Cost of a first-class stamp: $0.05 x's 50 = $2.50
Cost of a gallon of regular gas: $0.33 x's 50 = $16.50
Cost of a dozen eggs: $0.49 x's 50 = $24.50
Cost of a gallon of Milk: $1.03 x's 50 = $51.50

The current value of a $1 in 1967 is $6.56 today, so all you have to do is multiply any of the prices on the list by 6.56.

WOW! Thanks for the list! This is actually quite scary. I can only imagine what Rolex prices would be 43 years from now!!! A $25k Gold Rolex piece going for over $100k???
