Help with Rolex Oyster Precision
Hi guys,
hoping I could get some advice or background on what i have inherited. My father has recently passed away and left what I believe to be a gold plated Rolex Oyster Precision. I am not sure of the date of origin as my father inherited it from an older gentleman that he used to consider to be his uncle in the late 50's early 60's. The gentleman in question was a dentist and my grandmothers employer. It is possible that the watch dates from earlier in the century. I know that the existing metalic elasticated strap is not the original but a non-rolex best like for like replacement from what I have been told. It has hall marks and I believe is also gold plated. The model number of the watch is 6022 x The reg number is 840423. Rolex.jpg Sorry if this sounds disjointed. I have no idea what I am talking about or what I am asking truth be told, hence why I have come to this forum. Any help or advice is most welcome and appreciated. Matt |

Hi. What does it say on top of the crown (winding stem)?

A watchmaker with the proper tools will be able to remove the case back. The case material should be stated on the inner case back. Are you sure it is gold plated/gold filled and not solid gold? The watch looks by styling to be late '40s-early '50s and is a manual wind. By your SN it is about 1951-52. It looks to be in great condition with original dial. You should just switch to a nice brown croco (or similar exotic) strap -- it looks to be 19mm between the lugs (no?). You should surely have it serviced as well if you plan to wear it. A good independent watchmaker should be more than adequate to the task.
Nice heirloom!

Volkersports - On top of the winding stem there is a Rolex crown with a horizontal line underneath. Does that make sense or mean anything to you?
adam78 - thanks for your input. 19mm between the lugs exactly. The back of the watch unscrews quite easily and I have already had a look. As well the original stamps there are a number of manual engravings; maybe these signify previous services??? What should I be looking for with regards to the case material? I can take a photo if this helps? But i've a feeling you're going to tell me never to take the back off by myself ever again...... You suggested that I replace the current strap? Are your recommendations in-line with the styling of this watches era or what you personally feel would best compliment it? Another thing guys if you can offer advice; I have worked out how to wind up the watch using the winding stem but I am at a loss as to how I am supposed to set the time. Please excuse my ignorance. Thanks guys. Anymore advice you can offer will be most apprciated. Matt Last edited by Mattyr95; 29 November 2010 at 05:19 AM.. Reason: miss spelling |

Matt, can you photograph the inner case back, high-enough resolution to make out the engravings? It should be too tight to remove by hand if it had been screwed down correctly, but it's not dangerous to remove it by hand if you can. Just don't go wearing it around unless it is screwed down properly. To set the time you must (carefully) pull out the stem all the way to the 2nd position (the 1st is to wind the mainspring).
As to a strap, here are some of mine, which might look nice on your watch: Ostrich Shell cordovan Lizard

Time set successfully! Many thanks.
I really like the look of the ostrich strap actually. I may just leave the strap as it is for a little while though out of deference to my Father. Photograph of the inner case back below. I have over sharpened it to enhance the engravings. |

I suppose you realize it is indeed (10K) solid gold. I thought so.

I thought so too but wasn't sure. Thanks for verifying it for me. Any idea what the various etchings could be all about?
