Tell me about this GMT 1675

my father-in-law received it as a wedding present from his wife in 1969. he wore it every day for 30 years (and beat it like a rented mule) and then put it away. it was purchased through the air force PX in germany. i'd like to have an idea as to its value and what it would take to get it cleaned up for wear. it definitely needs a new crystal, but it's keeping good time. the bracelet links are non-original, but the clasp is (he has the original links, along with the box and papers - he was just worried that the links were on the verge of coming apart).

Wow...that is a nice GMT. Looks like a gilt from the 60s. If he decides to service it, he should keep the dial, hands, bezel original and don't polish the case. That's exactly the kind of GMT I'm looking for.

The text is gold lettered, opposed to white text. I just have a regular 1675.

Another example of a gilt:

Being gilt also makes it more valuable than a regular 1675 and harder to find. With boxes and papers it is definitely worth something.

interesting. thanks. i know you can't assign a value without seeing it in person, but can you give me a ballpark figure? i've seen other 1675s go for $3-5k. would this be in that range?

he thinks he has the box, but he's not sure about the papers. i told him to get looking!

Not an expert, but I know it's definitely over $5k. I've been looking for a gilt, the prices vary (so far I've seen similar ones for 6.5-8k depending on condition). I'm guessing that your father's would be worth 8-11k give or take if it has boxes and papers? Maybe someone can give you a more exact price. If it had pointed crown guards it would be worth even more!

interesting - thanks! it's pretty beat up, but he definitely used it as a "tool watch" for many, many years. i'm wearing it right now (feels awesome!), and it's keeping perfect time.

From the pics, the watch is not a PCG model, but still is a pretty awesome watch

well, he definitely bought it in '69, but it certainly could've been sitting in the case for a year or two.

If you can get the band off you can look up the serial and see what year it is.

Very nice GMT even better with family history Kyle has given you some good information. I would say it dates to between 1965 to 1968 the later date being when they switched to white printing and a large-arrow 24hr/GMT hand. Serial number would be around 1,30x,xxx with a 1570/5 movement.

Fine looking 1675 you have there Patrick ...

Looks to me to be an honest, correct, late 60's GMT. Especially nice hands including the original small GMT hand - good to see.

Like the whole Rolex family, the 1675 has heaps of variants and a wide range of values. Mine's an oddball, SWISS only, gilt, mini-radial dial.

Doesn't get much wrist-time but seems to stay in the collection

Definitely worth getting the movement serviced & lubes. Take it to someone who knows Rolex and what they are doing.

That might be the best as vintage Pepsi I've seen. A coworker had one he bought for about$165 I think when he served in Southeast Asia for the US Air Force in the the 1960s. That was the watch of choice for pilots and special forces NCOs. The history behind that stunning timepiece must be amazing. I would definitely hold on to it. Whatever you do please know you have a very collectible and valuable work of art!

thanks, this is all great information. he's retired now, but for many years, my father in law worked as a lineman for the power company, wearing that watch every day. he even lost it at work once, and found it the next day, under the wheel of one of their trucks!

while it definitely has sentimental value, he's a very practical guy. i would imagine he'd sell it if the price were right. my feeling is that he should either fix it up or sell it so somebody gets to enjoy it, rather than letting it sit in his sock drawer!
