Napa. Hotel: Auberge Du Soleil. Get several massages. Play golf. Visit as many of your favorite Vineyards as you can; don't drive, get a limo. French Laundry for dinner. Hot air ballooning. Be sure to stop over in The City- Top of the Mark Hopkins for drinks.

Can you narrow it down a bit more? kids, no kids? city? resort?

Napa is a great suggestion ... roadtrip from LA to Sanfran and suroundings is excellent!

If with babies, I loved the Sandpiper Bay Club Med in Port St. Lucie, FL.

Yup, can't beat Hawaii!

Skiing in Colorado is not too shabby either ...

Otherwise, fly to LA, rent a car and drive all the way to Napa via Carmel, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, etc ...

I'd still go Napa by myself. There is so much to do over there. The tasting and restaurant is worth the trip itself.

Yep. Stunning place for hiking but not much to do there other than that. Actually, pretty dead.

My favorite Monument Valley experience was getting to fly my friend's home-built airplane through the spires.

If you are looking for a cool desert trip I would highly recommend Sedona or Moab instead. Both places have a great deal more than hiking, although the hiking in each is world class.

Another suggestion is Kanab UT. It's close to Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, and the North rim of the Grand Canyon. Prettier than Sedona IMHO. Great place to use as a "base" for motorcycle day trips.

I'd need to know more particularly what you're interested in. What season? Do you want urban or rural? Do you want sport/outdoorsy or lazy lay-aroundy? Cold climate winter fun or a tropical beach? Even if you narrow down your needs topically, there would still be dozens of wonderful choices. We are lucky in that we have it all.

You'll be thankful for that, trust me. But New Orleans for Jazz Fest is a treat.
