Service the DeepSea
Bought the watch the first year out. Whats the opinions on a complete service of the watch? As everybody knows its not cheap to do and less than 5yrs from time of purchase. Whats everybody think?

When you say the first year out do you mean last year?
If you bought it more than 5 years ago you could have it serviced if you want to remain within Rolex's suggestion about the intervals but some people can wait up to 10 years if not more. It's up to you! EDIT: I should ask, is it still running strong? Did it start to act crazy?

Just trying to get advice on if and when I should have the watch serviced. Bought it the 1st year on the market. Runs great but wanting to know if I should follow a schedule of sending it in. Any advice would help. Thanks..SV

Unless I have any crazy problems I do not get my watch checked out until five years in. Then every year or so I take to a watchmaker who puts on timing machine and checks amplitude (indicator of efficiency and general health measures balance wheel oscillation in degrees) and timing, has him crack open, for internal inspection (contamination from rotor striking case) and looks to see that their is lubrication in bearing surfaces, pressure test and expect him to hand back to me and say see me in a year or so. One thing about the DSSD, it takes special equipment to perform pressure test per Rolex requirements. My watchmaker has been waiting on the equipment. That said if if passes the standard pressure test it is likely to pass the more stringent requirement based on its design.
Generally, when the amplitude falls below 200° the watch should be serviced. There are other things that can go wrong which would require one to perform service, so listen to a competent ethical watchmaker. The approach to service of every five years is draconian. With computer technology giving insight into what is going on inside our wrist machine a much more sophisticated approach to maintenance can be utilized. Will you make it past eight years, probably will you make past 10 years probably not. This is based on my experience of having approximately 100 watches looked at a year.

My guess is that it would really depends on what you believe is better. As I said, some people will send it every 3-5 years as per Rolex's suggestion while other will take the chance of waiting longer. Others will just wait until the watch doesn't keep good time and send it but the decision you take will also have an effect on the price of the service since parts can be damaged over the years if they aren't oiled often enough and will need to be replaced.

As George has said it needs special equipment to test it and I doubt if an AD could afford one considering the number of Deep Seas they would test.
I wouldn't have it serviced at 5 years as it might need to go to Rolexland for the pressure test. Unless your RSC has one of these.

Personally, unless you feel something is wrong, or the time keeping is erratic, wait until around the 7 or 8 year mark before sending it to Rolex. That's what's going to happen with mine eventually!!

If any dive watch is used in water its wise to pressure check although the DSSD is rated to a depth that will be never used.As long as its pressure checked to 200m plus it will be fine for scuba.Rolex does recommend service at 5 years but most Rolex today if not used regularly for diving etc could go to 7-8 years if lightly used.

I agree Peter but a RSC won't do that.

mine is a Feb' 2010 & rotated along with 3 others, it doesn't get hammered nor is it subjected to underwater activity so, unless something is obviously wrong mine won't be going into service for some time yet, official servicing isn't cheap so if it ain't broke enjoy it for a bit longer

Unless you have reason to believe the watch is malfunctioning (or not fully waterproof) I would only send it in for a service at the earliest after 5-6 years.

I'd wait..
From what you said it seems like things are good with your DeepSea.
Maybe a pressure test but I see no need for a full service if it's not needed right now.. |
