What is a better investment piece? Explorer II or Daytona?

I'm a newbie when it comes to watches. The only rolex I own is an Explorer II (M-serial) black face. Now, I'm considering on upgrading to a pre-owned Black Face Daytona SS, preferably V, G or random serialed. Now my question is, which one would be a better investment? If I were to get the Daytona, I would have to definitely sell/trade my Explorer II for it.

The Explorer 2 - at least the 16570 - has had poor re-sale value while the Daytona in SS has had very good re-sale value. However non is an investment.

Daytona would be the better option with regards to a future resale value, but we know that we shouldn't really think like that dont we ? lol

I always liked the chronograph type watches but couldn't afford it at the time.

That's what I heard as well. Would you consider Zenith El Primero watches a better investment?

I would think so too since it is one of the popular models out there.

No, I would say that Zenith holds value worse than Rolex. If you want to buy a watch for speculation purposes only go with a rare vintage complicated Patek. Needless to say that could cost you 20 Daytona's.

There's not much in it.

Either will be worth the current market price plus inflation, perhaps a little more.

Get the one that "sings" to you. It's all that matters.

How long are you planning on holding onto the Daytona before you sell it?

Probably hold it until I pass it on as a heirloom. I'm not the type where I would change watches like underwear. I just like the Daytona more but would like to own a watch that would hold its value in the long run (not like my 2 Tag Heuers). But also, already owning an explorer ii, i just don't want to be selling it off to fund a daytona knowing that in the long run, the value of the watch has long depreciated.

I'm coming from a sportscard hobby world, cards tend to hold its value and don't decline as much (it's like the stock market, if the player does well, the price would increase). Like Michael Jordan autographs, they've been on the slight increase in the past years. I don't know much about watches, but would a daytona be the same way? Increase in value over time vs. depreciates like a car?

A watch may rise in value, history would suggest that some do.

My question was meant to say that if you are not going to sell it, then it is not an investment.

Buy the watch you want to own and wear, not one that you think might make money

explorer II 40mm, i believe has just about the worst resale value among the SS rolex sports models... but that doesn't mean squat until u sell it.
imho,
if its a daily wear, the daytona doesnt wear quite as well due to the polished bits.

finally will u use chrono vs 2nd timezone?

Well, I love the style just can't justify the additional amount that needs to be forked over but if resale value will always remain pretty much consistent and stable then I see it as an investment and can justify the upgrade.

But I guess my question is, would the resale value pretty much remain the same on the daytona depending on how much MSRP and inflation factors in on the newer models?! Based on history, it seems that resale market on these watches tend to stay within 10-11k and it's been increasing (this is what I was basing my question on: http://www.minus4plus6.com/PriceEvolution.htm)

SS Daytona is the only new Rolex I would currently buy I would rather let someone else take the depreciation. That being said, if I didn’t find a used one I could live with than I would buy new.

Depends if you're talking long term or short term. Short term, the Daytona is probably the better bet, but in the long term, I think the market for the Daytona will collapse. My advice would be to buy the one you like the most, and if you get lucky, the value may go up.

Buy what you like. Neither will make you rich. If you want an investment piece go vintage or Patek

Daytona hands down.

In fact (and experts can chime in) but I'm under the impression that a SS Daytona probably holds it's value more than any other "luxury" watch. True?

Pre- owned Explorer II are selling for 50% more then 10 years ago. Pre-owned S.S. Daytona's are selling for the exact same amount as they were 10 years ago.

I love the daytona but the PCL annoy me, which is why I haven't picked up a SMURF either.

Go with the EXPII (im the minority ;) )
