Submariner date wheel delay
It's my girlfriend birthday today but while I was waiting for my rolex to click over from the 4th to 5th I noticed it changed 5 minutes past mid night? Is that acceptable or normal? I'm quite a perfectionist but does this mean it needs a service? I've tried cycling through the date wheel manually and it still delays! Any help is welcome!

It's not unusual. |

Thanks buddy started freaking out about it! Rolex was acting funny today ! It was +1 second over 48 hours and then changed to + 3 today! Now I found this out just really got to me! For the money paid I'm sure rolex could do a better job then this?

Mechanical watches will never be 100% accurate 100% of the time.
They're mechanical, Quatrz digital on the other hand are but nowhere near as classy! |

It's normal & I like you wondered the exact same thing as I had another watch with an ETA movement that switched over at midnight on the nose.

It's actually above average. :) In my experience, watches don't really gain/lose EXACTLY the same each day. Sure there's a trend, but honestly, if at the end of a month you're a minute or so off, it doesn't matter so much whether it gained 1 one day, and 2 or 3 another. Yes, if it lost 5, then gained 7, then lost 10, then gained 6, that would be a problem. Many things affect the timekeeping of your watch, temperature, the way your arm/body moves or doesn't move from one day to the next, resting positions, state of wind, etc. My Sub C's date used to change anywhere from 12:02 to 12:07, lately it seems to have improved, seems to change most often between 12:01 and 12:03. Honestly, I'm pretty OCD, and even at 12:07, I wasn't too bothered by it. My Panerai always changes at 11:53 on the nose. Can't seem to get too upset about it. :) My IWC changes at 12:01 on the nose. All watches are different. Next time it's not changing by 12:02, shake the watch back and fourth on your wrist a few times, not too hard, just a quick jiggle, I bet the date will change. It's my theory as the watch breaks in and cycles through a lot of date changes, that tiny bit of friction that hangs the date an extra minute or 2 smooths out, and changes get more regular. |

Its fine--as long as the date snap is instaneous and occurs within a few minutes after 00:00:00 your watch is doing what it was designed to do.

Yep, mine changes at 12:04 every night-- I don't often see it, but I can hear it!

What would concern me is that I'd spent all that money without really knowing what I was buying.
It's an exceptionally accurate mechanical watch with a quick change date. Mechanical watches used to take an hour or so for the date to change. Rolex improved on that a bit. LCD quartz is what you need if you want a date change at midnight. |

Thanks megalobyte that's made me so much happier !! Thought maybe there was too much oil on it or something restricting the date wheel! And with the time accuracy! Maybe I shouldn't be so anal with things

Your watch needs to be fixed. Putting it in a toaster for about 10 minutes should do the trick!

But collecting watches has over time mostly cured me of it, as I realized no watch is 100% perfect if your OCD is powerful enough. I've learned to accept minor flaws, both cosmetic and functional. I read a great quote the other day. "If a problem wants to worry me, it'll have to make itself obvious" In other words, wait for a problem to come to you, don't go looking for it, you'll always find one if you want to. Myself never awake past midnight to check when ever my date changes at my mature age. But as long as it changes by next morning when I wake up,and I can see its changed, I'm still alive to enjoy another day.Now that's far more important than worrying when a date changes I can assure all you guys..
