Afraid to wear your watch?

On a trip, on vacation, in a pool, sleep with it on.......WTH?

I just don't get it. Can someone explain to me, please?

Its just a watch and nothing more. Wear it, it'll get scratched, and show wear marks. So What.

Nope except to sleep with.

I picture myself knocking my gf in the head with it accidently and having to drive her to the hospital for stitches at 3am

Well a Rolex is a major expense/investment so i understand people being careful, but the second a watch is coverd by insurance there shouldn't be another worry in the world and you should wear it and be free.

I think some people buy watches to wear for specific and very special occasions and not as daily wear items. In those cases, I think they would want to keep the watch as pristine as possible and try to keep it from scratches, or whatnot.

Some others would probably buy watches as keepsakes, jewelry, and in some cases - investment items that could potentially hold value over time. I guess in the end, it's to each his own...when a person spends more than $100K for a watch, I'm sure they wouldn't want it to be scratched that quickly...

I'm only afraid to wear it when tubing in the lake.

I wear the tissot t-touch then, which I still love.

Had I a sport rolex, with the secure clasp, I'd have no fear, but the DD takes one little flick and it's off.

As for wearing it in some of the countries I visit? Depends, on both the country, and who escorts me.

Only the slight worry of having to draft up a letter to the insurance and go through their hoops.

Not a big deal, but it would consume more time for me than simply putting the rolex in the safe and rockin the non-insured watch.

When traveling to cities I'm not familiar with I sometimes leave my Sub in the safe. No reason to attract attention in the wrong place with the wrong people insurance or not. But most of the time I love wearing my watch.

I actually can't understand wanting to sleep with a watch on. I had never considered it prior to seeing people post about it.

But many don't wear watches today they just wear the brand and reading the thousands of posts on TRF over the years.Myself just dont know why some buy a Rolex watch, after all its one of the toughest mechanical watches made today. But like I stated many just wear a brand today plus the factor that it might cost more than others.

I can understand people wanting to be careful but what fascinates me are the people who apparently do not trust Rolex with respect to water resistance. Why buy a dive watch if you do not want to get it wet? And if you do not want to get it wet, then why ask the question?

Yup it's just a watch.. that costs upwards of 8K

I'm always careful not to scratch my SubC but defy popular convention by running at the gym with it. I time runs on the shiny bezel; trying to beat 2.4km in 10 mins or under.

Each to their own, wear it as a daily beater or keep it for special occasions. Either way am sure you get to enjoy the rolex.

Obviously some are a little nuts about it, particularly when the watch is new, but it's really not hard to understand why someone might want to baby a shiny, new, extremely expensive watch, is it?

No different then someone buying a new Porsche Cayenne, and choosing not to abuse it in rough terrain. Some might, many wouldn't. No right or wrong.

I agree that it's a little odd to buy a Sub and be afraid to get it wet. But again, we all pay for the right to be as careful or as careless as we want to be. You can't ridicule someone for choosing to keep their expensive new watch in nice condition, or at least you shouldn't.

I have to disagree with this. If this were true, there would be no reason to buy anything more than the cheapest quartz watch one can find.

Almost everyone here believes that fine watches stand in a different league than ordinary watches and among the various brands of fine watches, there are those who firmly believe that each one possesses qualities that set it apart from anything else on the market.

As for scuffs, scratches, and dings, my watches have them and they are in part the story of my life since I started wearing them.

And yes, there are times when I am afraid of wearing a $5000 to $7000 watch and honestly, there are times when one should put the watch in a pocket or leave it at home.

It should be noted that I dinged up my DJ pretty badly recently when I tried to put it in my shirt pocket and missed. In that case, I did more harm than good, but that does not mean that caution should be thrown to the wind.

My Rolex watches are built tough and they serve me well, but they are not expendable by any means and they deserve some care.

I wear mine everyday, gym, swimming, tennis, holidays, work, university etc just not sleep because of comfort reasons and also not wanting to fling my arm about in my sleep and bash it against the bed or glass bedside cabinets :)

I don't know about you guys, but for me $10,000 is a lot of money. Yeah, I wear mine everyday, but I AM careful with it. I'm the same way with everything I have having significant value... House, cars, bikes, pens... In other words, I take care of my stuff!

I think Rolex owners can be put into 4 categories ...

1. For some people, they have saved long and hard for their watches ... in some cases, what they've spent may be out of proportion to their income, and it's one of the most precious possessions they have. And so, yes, I can understand that they want to keep their watches in the most pristine condition possible. A Rolex may indeed be a super tough watch, but many of us treat them like jewelry as they've cost us an arm and a leg to acquire one! These are the ones whose friends would likely say 'how the f*** can you afford a Rolex??' lol.

2. And there are others that have enough disposable income that they can use a $8k watch purely as a tool watch and don't give them anymore care as they would a G Shock. And their seems to be plenty in that category judging by the 'what car do you drive' or 'show us your swag' threads. These are the ones that are likely to also have multiple Rolex's, precious metal models etc. To these people, a watch is either a work of art or a daily beater, something that they can enjoy whenever they want, and whatever they are doing, whether it be a $5k or $50k or $100k!

3. And a lot of us are in the middle ground. A Rolex is still an expensive purchase, but it's within our means and is not all together out of proportion to what we can afford in the rest of our lives. We treat our watches with due care, but not baby them. We are happy to wear them daily, we are happy for them to get wet, we don't unduly stress if they acquire normal use scratches.

4. Owners that are totally OCD about their watches! :-)

(I'm in category 3 with a foot also in 4!)

I fall into both camps at different times. I used to wear my SS GMT every day and not worry about it. It had the dings and scratches to prove it. I would wear my TT Sub a few days a month to keep it running right and it had a few dings and scratches. I did not care; it was the story of the watch.

Then I had the RSC service them. Now they are so pristine I do not want to damage them. I have been wearing my Seamaster 300M Diver Chronometer Titanium. Whatever damage I can do to it can be erased with a 3M pad and some water. Love titanium.

I guess I am just going to have to get used to the idea.

It's a $10,000 watch, is it really a surprise to you that people are afraid to damage it? If water gets into the watch it will cost a good amount to fix. If you don't like those type of threads (), I suggest you pass over them.

I've been wearing a watch since I was 8. I always sleep with it on - no problem and I can see what time it is. Without contacts or glasses at night I cannot see a clock. I only take it off when I shower.

My Rolex goes in the pool, the ocean, and the Gulf of Mexico. And is on my wrist during lawn work, car repair and washing. In other words whatever I do it does.

I agree with you... but I understand very well... it would be like walking around with 10k or in some cases 30+k in cash... you wouldnt just take that on vacation or jogging or whatever right?

What's the difference between a $10k watch that one babies, and someones $10k boat, or $50k car, or you wife wearing $10k in rings / bracelets / necklaces / earrings? Does your wife agonize over wearing her jewelery as much as people agonize over wearing their watches here? Are their jewelry forums where women ask the same sort of questions? Or car forums where members ask 'Is it safe to drive my BMW in the rain?' or 'can I take my Range Rover off road?'

It's all tongue in cheek here, no replies are meant to be taken too seriously here! It's just fun to banter and write about our 1st world problems
