Icon7 Thoughts on this sub 1680

Hi all,
first of all thank you for such a fantastic forum, so much good reading.
I would be so thankful if you help me with some advice
After having sold my Sinns and my speedy, I very sure my next watch will be a 1680 eventhough it was a close race against a 5513.
I´ve reading intensively up on the 1680 and found out that I can´t afford a Red sub, but really would like one with papers as I still a novice and could easily overlook flaws and deficiencies. I know its a learning curve, but any help would really be appreciated.
At the moment I´m looking at this 1680 with punched papers from a parisian dealer explorerwatch.com called jacques callier. I have called him and he was very polite and seemed trustworthy.
https://www.chrono24.dk/rolex/submar...arch/index.htm

Any comments on the watch perhaps ref on the dealer would be appreciated
Btw. price is a little less than 8000$ and my maximum limit

Thanks in advance
Peer

I find most of their stuff overpriced, in general. This one has had quite a lot of polishing on the case. Are those service/luminova hands? I wouldn't buy it.

Hi Karl,
thanks so much for your advice, agreed those hands looks too white and probably are a replacement somewhere along the line. I´ll be pressed to find some matching hands.
Thanks again, I would be very happy for where to get a nice not to creamy 1680 with matching hands :)

I just looked at this 1680 and agree that the hands might be replacements, but that would not be a deal breaker. I do not see any of the issued booklets or the outer box. Also, I can't tell what year the watch is due to the serial number not be listed. The case appears very nice in my opinion. If the Submariner is a late 1970's model, serviced, and available only with the accessories in the photos, I'd say the price is too high - even for a dealer.

Hi Springer, thank you so much for your advise, I might pass on this one.
I´m having a closer look at a 1680 from a local dealer here in Copenhagen, no box or papers, but new service. The dial and hands looks like tritium to me, but would really like some advice again :) Price is $5800

Hi Springer,
thanks so much for your opinion, any specific thoughts ?
I´m not sure, but I think the bezel is luminova and I´m not really sure how polished the case is.
Thanks again, all help really appreciated :)

looks like mine...

Nice 1680, I just bought a 1978 model, with service papers, and it had the same sticker on the caseback. As with my watch, yours has what appears to be a new bezel insert. Your price is good. The service on my watch was over 1,000 dollars, which the previous buyer paid.

Under 6k US dollars is a good deal in my opinion.., are you referencing US dollars here...?

I too cannot pry my wallet open for a RedSub, but I have one on the radar as a future investment/safe queen....

The dial is a replacement dial. I can't speak for the bezel insert based on the photo, but it was probably replaced with the dial which is a very common practice. Don't get hung-up on this polish vs unpolished case businesss. Most vintage watches that have been serviced have a case that has been polished. The key for most people is whether excessive polishing has worn the case down too much. The 1680 the photo has a very nice case based on the photos.

Tanks again guys for helping me out. Its a 1979, but just for the learning who do I see that the dial is a replacement ? Also, too me the date wheel seems a little different to Tudor 66 sub which looks really nice btw.
Considering the replacement of the dial and bezel, would 5800$ be fair amount ?

Thanks so much for all the advice, really appreciated.
As I might go for this one this week, I would just like to ask for some final thoughts on the watch and what to look out for and off course if the price tag of $5800 is fair.
Cheers

Hi and thanks again for your advices
I am getting very close buying my first 1680 and just wanted to throw this one in the final. The price tag is $6000, but it seems to me as having original dial and hands aswel as a minimal polished case. Also stretch seems to be minimal on the bracelet. But again, I´m a novice and any kind of input would be fantastic.
Here are the pics
