Swap a "classic" for a newbie?

I still have my 1st Rolex, a SS Submariner that I got in 1991. Not really a classic, but 17 years old and my 1st. It runs great and is in fantastic condition. I kind of like the new GMT's. I was thinking of swapping/trading-up/replacing (whatever) the Sub for the new SS GMTIIc. I don't need or want two SS Sport models. Any thoughts?

Well if i where you i would keep my first rolex. I think that the first rolex has sentimental value and it is linked with the thing that you worked hard to obtain it. Now if you feel like flipping do it. All depends on you I just remember that there are some members here that regreted flipping their first rolex

I think you would regret getting rid of your first love.
There is always room for another.

I think it really depends on how attached your to "your first". The GMT IIc is a fantastic watch that has all the "neat new" features.
Having said that, 17 years is a lot of memories.....

I think you will regret selling that SS Sub Date!

Better keep it and save for the SS GMT IIc!

If it has sentimental value....keep it. If not...flip it.

It's as simple as that.

Some people are not sentimental at ALL....LOL....and they would even flip a Rolex gifted to them by a certain family member.

I sold my 7 year old SS Sub Date (my first Rolex), after purchasing the GMTc. Honestly, the SS Date would have just collected dust in the watch winder for the rest of its life. The GMTIIc is that nice.

I vote for saving for the new one. It will be a great loose.. SS sub is a real classic timeless watch.

Having a bunch of watches around is just not for everybody.

If putting a nice old Sub out there for someone else to care for, who just might be waiting for it, helps you get one you will really love and wear....

I say go for it.

Personally, I would just buy a bigger watch box.....but hey, that's just me..

Most of me agrees with Sharif. If you're not sentimental and the Sub would just gather dust, flip it for something you really want.

But there's that part of me that says keep the Sub and save for the GMT (and that's from someone who loves his GMT). I couldn't give up my first Rolex even though it gets minimal wrist time. It's the watch that got me into this crazy addiction in the first place and I will keep it around to remind me why I love this habit.

Hard to predict how you'll feel

If you can afford it, why not get the new GMT, and if you're not wearing the Sub in a few months, then sell it.

I've got the 17 year old SS Sub and my dream watch, the TT Blue Sub, as well as a Breitling Emergency. I was also thinking of a Panerai or the GMT.

My vote is to flip it, since you already entertained this thought and probably the Sub doesn't hold much sentimental value to you. Good luck either way!

Hi - I'm a new member and I've just picked up your thread from last week.

As others have said, it depends entirely on how much sentiment is tied up in your first Rolex. I bought my SS GMT (1675) new in 1967 - it is now forty years old, it has the odd small scratch and the luminosity of the dial is shot, but it has been my daily watch all my adult life through thick and thin, it keeps perfect time and there is absolutely no way I would trade it for a more modern model - I would feel that I was betraying it!! If you keep your first Rolex, you might feel like that about it one day!!

Merry Christmas,

Stan.

I'm with Bo too. I'd save up and buy the GMTIIc independently. You can never have enough watches, and like Transient and Mike said, 17 years is a LOT of memories. I've had mine for not even 6 months yet, and I can't see selling it, even for a grail watch.

Man, I wish, I can flip my wife and go for a new and good looking one. But, I can't.
And, I wish, I can get more wife. Addition to what I have now. But, I can't.
Then, I wish I can get more ROLEX. That, my wife said I can.

Yeah, if I had to sell one, I guess it would be the last one I got, not the 1st. Luckily, I don't have that worry.
