Does this indicate a problem?
This image (link below) shows a serial number that has been partly scratched out and then re-engraved by hand (apparently). I see this a lot on Tudors on E-bay. Everything else about the watch looks good and the seller photographs these findings very clearly, indicating the seller doesn't perceive a problem. But it still sends up warnings signals to me. (I think to myself; 'was this stolen at one point?', etc.)
Is this common? Does this indicate a problem or is the scratched and re-engraved serial number due to some other cause? Why isn't the model number similarly affected? Thanks for your thoughts and experience. (No implications or disrespect at all intended to the seller of this watch; I am just using this image as an example of a commonly represented finding on E-bay watches.) http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/1/3/9...49558271_o.jpg |

One reason.
If a Rolex is stolen it has been known that the thief will remove the serial number and in this case .. Replace it with possibly another number. Just a possibility. I wouldn't touch it

Is the first letter a "B"?

Yeah that's what I read it as, the vertical line isn't as prominent as the rest of it though.
The scratching looks like the person tried to file the serial number off and didn't have much luck.... Then they decided to throw a random character in front of it? The first '5' looks suspect too if you ask me, doesn't look like the second '5'. This is sketchy. I'd pass, especially if you plan on having anyone but yourself do the maintenance on it. |

Definitely something weird going on here...it looks like a B or a 3 that's been tampered with.

Don't even think about buying this watch. Seen many old rolexs with the numbers barely visable, you had to use a loop to read them, but the font was always correct on a gen, and never messed with
