Submariner 1680: Red vs. White
Besides the dial, is there anything different between the earlier red versions and the later white 1680's??
Same movement? Both have hacking second hand? What about the date wheel? What's this silver date wheel I see and hear about from time to time? Thanks for the help.... |

I remember reading that the 1575 movement changed from non-hacking to hacking in around 1972. This is not set in stone though as there are likely non-hacking watches made after this date.
The silver date wheel is exactly that. The colour behind the number is not white as it may seem from a distance, but a light silver colour. Btw, Im a noob when it comes to this stuff too. Someone more knowledgeable are sure to chime in. |

The bracelet is 9315 for red and for late 70s it's a 93150.

About the date wheel ... it's not just that the color is silver on the Subs, it's actually a brushed metal with texture. There are other date wheels that are just painted silver and are not the brushed metal variety. I believe those were used on 1675 GMTs.

So what time frame were the silver date wheels used n the 1680's? Early or later? Red or white?

The1960's and early 1970's were white, both GMT and Sub. Some of the red Subs appear to have a light silver, painted dial. The brushed metal date wheel was later in the 1970's to very early 1980's.

First run of 16800, 16660 and 16750 all had silver datewheels as well. They were a matte silver without the brushing. I searched high and low for some for my 16800 and 16750 As I'm partial to silver dates.
