Why do men buy like they do?
Good evening,
This is my first ever post, and would like to thank all of you for providing such a great forum. It's nice to know, it's not only me that shares this bizarre passion. I'm from the UK and have owned what some may term a 'decent' watch since the mid 90's. I very proudly started of with a Tag Heuer Quartz, and then progressed to the Omega Seamaster Professional Automatic (Full size) in 2000/2001. For all of you enthusiasts, you know you can not justifiably knock the Omega. It was then in 2004 when I realised Rolex was the way to go. I'd always wanted a Submariner date yet upon passing the local AD's window, I saw and managed to convince my wife that the lonely GMT II with Red and Black bezel was the way to go, surely this was a good as a Sub? £2350 later, and not even thinking of asking for discounts, I was so proud to own this watch, yet like the nag of a reformed smoker when they catch a whiff of smoke, I couldn't rid myself of the need for that 16610. The 16610 was in my eyes so timeless, so masculine, so perfect. Within 12 months, I'd sold the 16710, bought the Sub and away we went. Loving every minute, (excuse the unintentional punn), kids growing up and then it strikes..... 'The SS Daytona'. What is it with us blokes? Can't have what you want, just makes you want it even more... (Watches may I add, I am totally and utterly happily married!!!) The internet scouring becomes more and more, hours of searching different sites, and simply finding your fingers defaulting to typing in 'Rolex Daytona'. I felt that I was like a fox that couldn't get in to that rubbish sack on a Tuesday night, just before it's collected on a Wednesday morning, I had to find that chicken bone, that bit of left over KFC that would give me that ultimate satisfaction. Within a month, the SS 116520 (White) was upon my wrist. I drove back from the dealers premises having paid almost £2k over list, and had flipped my Sub date. In life, I have no regrets, and that's the kind of guy I am. I would only regret the things I haven't done. As much as I enjoyed the SS 116520 for 3 months, It didn't make me fall in love with it, and that's the turmoil I suffered the last 3 months. For those of you who love your Daytona's I rejoice, it simply was just not the right route for me to take. (I must learn to upload my pictures correctly, yet I did manage to get 'the ultimate shot' of the LEC against the white dial, before it was sold on). Making sure I don't make any more mistakes, tomorrow I receive my Sea Dweller. I will now own the 'tool' of all tool watches, and this will stay with me for always. Finally, and not being selfish, the wifes Omega will go into storage and part of the proceeds of my 116520 will pave the way for my wifes new Silver Jubilee Diamond Dial Datejust. Ladies and gentlemen, the $6,000,000 question is what would you have done??? |

Welcome pal
The Daytona is not for everyone, you've had the experience which is more than most, you must enjoy what you put on your wrist, that is paramount. I hope the SD does it right for you, and it is the tool of tools

Hi and thanks for your comments. The SD is superb, I've received it now and it feels like home. I know I've 100% made the right decision.

Welcome to TRF, Andy!
IMHO, you made a very good choice! I am going through the very exact same thoughts at the moment. Should I flip my SS Cos and go for an SD?? I have had the SD 3 times before, but somehow this watch cannot get out of my head! Enjoy your SD for many years to come!

Fair point regarding keeping just the one watch, I somehow find it hard to justify owning more than one, yet I truly admire some of your collections. It's a toughie Bo, but you know it's just a matter of time, the inevitable will happen.

Welcome to TRF, Andy.
Sub-date or Daytona? I'd go with the 16610 - still the world's best sports watch - no ifs or buts!!! Hope you enjoy your stay on this great forum of ours!! Cheers - JJ

Welcome to TRF, Andy. Just remember that they are only watches. When you are done with your SD, you can always start the circle all over again.
