apparently i am a rolex AND omega guy

i always kinda thought that omega was the 'came in second' guy in the watch race being such a rolex devotee.....but i was with a few guys and we were discussing watches and my pals dad (80) mentions his omega he's had on his wrist for 30 yrs.....so he takes it off and hands it to me....and i get it.....i get the omega thing....solid, conservative but clean designs....but after learning a bit about movements, i actually think omega is busting a move for a move into competition with rolex with the twin axial thing....and actually as a lifelong competitive swimmer myself, omega is all over the place with references to sports timing....so heres my thinking....i do think we're gonna have another financial 'adjustment' and i think future adjustments actually are just markers for new 'financial normals'.....and i think that at the price, omega just may be a better place to put $ than rolex in a challenged financial market....im diversified re watches (rolex, omega and a tissot as a surf watch beater).....but i look at 'do i get a sub blnr when i have a hulk? no.....i think maybe the only other rolex i might get now is the dssd, but i think ill get a planet ocean chronometer with orange bezel and pushers first.....sorry for the ramble...coffee kicking in:smoking:

We are on the same boat right now. I think I will be getting that new 2014 Omega Seamaster 300 since I love NO date watches to compliment my 114060. My father's watch when I was little was a 1950s Omega Seamaster which was given to him by his older sister from the US. So that is why I have came to love Omega too especially now that they are making incredible movements at a lower price point than Rolex.

Omega prices have been rising too. They seem to be aggressively innovating. The coaxial escapement is one example but the totally non magnetic 15000 gauss movement is another--which they will be incorporating across the line. Personally, I find many of the 8500 watches too tall for my taste--and wrist. My SMPc 2500D is just right and built like a tank. But then, just picked up an Explorer 214270 the other day and love it as well, and my Ball watches too.

both are awesome brands and yes, with Omega "upping its game" in recent years, I think Omega does now present a great value, what with all the technologies in the new SM300 at a much lesser price point than any Rolex or comparative sports watch...but I think in most cases, most people have been Omega and Rolex people anyway always I think they go together well in a collection :)

I own Rolex but I also like Omega. And I will likely pick up an Omega before this year ends.

I'm a proud owner of both too. I give the edge to Rolex, but their higher prices reflect this too. Both brands represent good value for me.

My collection is built around Omega watches.
Have bought and sold more than a dozen since I began collecting.

I like the brand and feel they provide an excellent product/value.

I've looked hard at Rolex many times and have never been able to justify
the price. Often, I found the Rolex watch size was smaller than I prefer.

Maybe I'll buy a Rolex one day.
But for now, Omega does it for me.

Two great brands, well worth being a part of a collection.

Being a bit of flipper, have owned several of each brand.

Too bad Rolex watches are not available at the same level of discount as the Omegas.

I just received a 41.5 Skyfall this past week.

An amazing watch!

Plus, it has helped me "get over" the sale of my blue dial DJ II with fluted bezel.

I have both. Vintage omegas are amazing pieces of history the fantastic dress watches. I have a 1972 speedy pro and it is my favorite watch. I also have multiple rolex watches and I love them equally. Some of the late 70's-early 2000's omegas didn't do it for me but their newer offerings are great.

Pre 70s Omega and post 2000 Omega are great really. Not that I haven't owned Omegas from the dark days but really their golden age ended in 1969. It's nice to see a resurgence though.

I own both (Rolex explorer & Omega SMP midsize), and both watches have very comparble fit and finish. The only major differences would be (in my opinion) is in the price. Rolex initial price is higher, but they retain an amazing retail value, compared to Omega... but if you're like me and you don't flip your watches often, then resale value is irrelevant.

I have both Rolexes and Omegas, and I love them both. If you research the history of the co-axial escapement, you will find that George Daniels got the patent in 1980. He approached Patek Philippe and Rolex to upgrade to his design. They both turned him down.

Then Omega stepped up to the plate and took on his invention. Best decision they have ever made. Over the next 20-25 years, every Swiss watch maker will acknowledge that it is a superior unit to what they are currently using.

Good job Big O!

Be safe.

I own both brands. Love them both equally as they both have their pros and cons. Don't have to worry as much about your surroundings with an Omega.

Back in the 50's and 60's Omega had it all over Rolex, then the Rolex marketing kicked in. I have both brands and love them both. My dress watches are mostly vintage Omega, no matter how hard I try I just can't make myself believe that a Rolex on a bracelet is truly a dress watch. Just picked up my wife's TT DJ from an overhaul, almost $400.00 from an independent, a similar Omega cost 1/2 that much for an overhaul. Guess we picked an expensive hobby.

Both brands are undoubtedy very good although clearly many will argue that Omega represents better value for money - an argument that could go on at some length!

I have a SMP and love it. Going to get the new aqua terra once it's released as it looks like a great all around watch. From t-shirt to dress shirt. I live in AK so the dress code is a bit more relaxed here and the AT should be the perfect everyday watch.

I don't have a rolex yet, but I joined this forum to learn the models and figure out exactly which one I want. I honestly prefer the Planet Ocean look to the Sub, but I just cant get over the desire to add a Sub C to the lineup.

Just bought the Speedmaster 9300. Couldn't get over the list of features from non-magnetic silicon main spring, to double barrel reserve, sapphire non reflective "sandwich" glass. Large white hands for day and night visibility, and potential a GMT use on the new 3 o'clock dial. Supposedly on this one you can also leave the center sweep hand running indefinitely, unlike the past models. I've owned many brands, and right about now, 1 Omega and 1 Ball for night viewing. Maybe another Rolex Submariner. I foolishly sold mine but will likely look for a bluesy TT either new or a 6613 from about 8 years ago.

ha.... current score is Omega 12 (soon to be 13) (14 soon to be 16, if you count the Mrs's) and Rolex 8 ( 11 with the Mrs's)

I find that in our profession, Omega is more appropriate... almost never wear the Rolex to work...too much of a stigma...

Omega however offers the elegance without the arrogance... one of the things I love most about it....

At some point, I can see myself becoming just an Omega guy...
