Help: Turn-O-Graph 6202

I would be really grateful for help from those on the forum that know much more than me on the above. The vintage look of the turny really appeals to me but I know little about them other than they seem to be a lot less popular than subs, explorers etc. I have been investigating the 1954/55 example below and would be grateful for views on its authenticity, and also a reasonable price range for it. Thanks in advance!

I would say 100% correct from what you show here.

The insert alone would set you back 3 grand. The bezel/insert assembly probably 4500.00

The dial and handset out of the watch....texture dial...big dot seconds...sky's the limit.

These parts are impossible.

Prices for these watches are all over the map. This one has good original bits and looks like the case is very nice and fat.

The texture dial is a premium.

Less popular watches...but good ones will command the price. So many are refinished dials and missing bezels. The bezel and insert are almost as rare as a real bakelite on a 6542. People with good ones won't turn loose of them unless they get the price. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see + 20k USD asking on that.

Thanks guys for the help so far. I understand that the serial number is 950xxx. I understand it dates the watch to 1954/5? Cheers.

Most likely 1954. Don't have my database at hand but 6202's are 948-950k serials.

Most all are that range of serial number. Lovely patina, waffle dial with the big second hand. Insert is clean and nice. I have the waffle with the split and small dot second. Plus a standard gloss dialed one. Lovely watches with great character but small and movement parts are not readily available. I really like more than the subs but they do not receive the same dollar value or love :-( M

Had a look at my spreadsheet: 949-953 it is. 950 will have a IV.53 or I.54 caseback. As stated earlier: prices are all over the place. Dials and bezels are extremely rare.

Thanks all for the help, I really appreciate the quality and depth of knowledge here. Now here's my conundrum. Do I like it enough to pay $23,500 for it?! There are many other watches I could buy for that amount of money.

I pegged the price pretty well. It's what I expected.

It's not far out of bounds for what it is. Quality is the benchmark and the dial, hands, and bezel and insert are a cut above. The case is also nice.

Whether someone wants to pay that or not is another question. I agree that's top and if I were looking I'd like to pay a little less.

They're really nice watches when they're nice.

It's a niche and the popularity of the submariner is certainly overshadowing, but you can't touch a similar era Sub in that kind of condition for twice that money...and it's really just a bigger bezel...a slightly heftier case and a name.

Granted if you go a little newer you can get a 6536-1 for less than twice but not a 6204 etc.

I'm a fan.

$23.5k is a retail price.

I think in terms of cash value you are looking at
$17-18k watch.

Replacement cost is probably $25-30k at this point
Considering the relative lack of examples.

Thanks to all of you for your input and views. I really appreciate them. Those are some sweet examples there R.W.T! You clearly are a fan!

I am going to see the watch in person on Thursday next week and see how I feel about it. I agree though that the price is high, although prices here in the UK are generally higher than in the US. That said, if I like it it will be time to negotiate. I'll report back at the end of next week. Cheers!

The texture dial is the money in that watch. If the dial was in the same condition but a standard black gloss it would be a lot less money for me. If you are not coveting the dial but rather just that kind of watch...you can probably look around and save some money.

After a little delay, I finally saw the watch "in the flesh today" and I have to say that it looks even better in person than in the photos. I also managed to obtain a few more photos. It looks to me as though everything checks out, as per the very helpful comments in this thread.

I am still trying to decide whether or not to pull the trigger... I really like the watch so it all comes down to price. The seller is quite firm on his cash price, but I might see if we can do a trade (which will have the effect of lowering the price for me). I'll let you know what happens.

It really is a gorgeous example, and that price (retail) really is all the money.

Agree, beyond the nice waffle dial, a smooth dialed example in very nice condition I looked at last week @ $15K US. M
