Icon9 feeling the spending squeeze as a result of the credit crunch?

a slew of economic and retailing figures suggests that people are becoming more cautious and shying away from "big ticket" purchases. Will this climate in anyway put a squeeze on your rolex spending for this year?

The aspect I'm most interested in is if the market forces / poor sales will lead to discounts at the ADs. Personally, I doubt it. The economy isn't as bad as the Dems would like you to think.

I do not know yet. I am waiting for price confirmation on the Sea Dweller-Deep Sea. However, I do feel I should be more subjective to any "unnecessary" spending

Whilst it does appear that we are headed towards a recession of some degree,I shall still be buying my Sea Dweller or Sub date. Much to the disgust of the wife, although the degree of disgust will be moderated by a new bedroom suite and re-carpeting the entire upstairs of the house! might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb!! lol....big issue! buy your big issue here!!

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new watch if it "smiled" at me. As Matt said, I don't think the economy is as bad as some would have us think.

Well since I lost my job due to corporate cut backs, I think I will hold off on any luxury purchases for a while. I did get a generous package, but the party is over. 50 YO and back in the job hunting mode simply sucks. BTW, life is still good. It beats the alternative.

economy and watch purchases

I'm not sure we can gauge from purchasers by "enthusiasts", I'm sure we make up no more than 1% of Rolex purchases at AD's.

I won't be purchasing anything this year but that is only because I'm very satisfied with my 16710 and 1601. I will say however the past few times I've been in my AD it was dead. Maybe one other person in the store.

The economy hurts less than the new prices, but it certianly doesn't help.

Velitsko is getting a Real Doll??????? Woohoo.

Just kidding!!!!!

I wasn't planning to get another Rolex this year although I may get a Moonwatch. Economy is shaky tho...arch. techs are usually first to go in the construction industry if there is a recession....will wait and see before laying any money down!

I'm hunkering down myself just in case. I don't know about the upcoming job cuts at my work place so I'm just not spending too much that is outside of the range of necessities.

Agreed about the economy. We are in a downturn, but it's not the pending catastrophe that many would have us believe. The "credit crunch" isn't what would keep me from buying a new watch, but the $5-6K price tag might. I have a wedding coming up and, frankly, a new watch has a pretty low priority right now. I'd say I wouldn't buy an expensive new watch more than every 2-3 years, regardless of the current state of the economy. Just in the name of financial responsibility.

Good attitude Brian. It always works out in the end.

Rolex has passed my comfort level in what I am prepared to pay for a watch, but I don't rule out vintage models in years to come.

Not so bad, eh?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2...ef=patrick.net

Optimism is an enviable trait, but it cannot disguise the dismal numbers of this economy. Seen what GE reported today? Or Washington Mutual? $110 for a barrel of oil, and it'll cost you $1.59 to get a Euro. The numbers don't lie. This financial crisis has only just begun, and how you checked your voter registration card will have zero effect on mitigating its impact.

I can't say it's the economy that has slowed down my watch buying. I just haven't seen anything recently that has me saying "I absolutely must have that piece, and damn the consequences." Should I run across the watch that does that for me, no doubt the plastic will pop out and the frequent flyer miles bank will get a boost.

Will the downturn really curb the collector? NO.
Will it curb Jo Bloggs? You Bet.

Economies go up, economies go down. It's what they do. Period. If you want to take the negative tack that the whole shebang is about to collapse, be my guest. Me, I'll stay positive with the realization that this country and its economy has, and always will, pull through. You take the good with the bad.

No plans to buy any more watches in 2008 for two reasons:
1) already bought 3 this year (s/hand)
and
2) there's a 'mini-me' due in approx. 3.5 weeks so my priorities have shifted somewhat.......

Our vacation cruise throught the Panama Canal has curbed my watch buying this year. Economy doesn't affect my job one bit.
