Should Official Chronometer Certificat # Match watch Serial #

Hello everyone. Looking at a TT Submainer 16803 with a 8.42xxxx serial # and the Official Chronometer Certificat # is 88xxxxx is this not right? Just don't understand the Official Chronometer Certificat paper say Chronometer No. 88xxxxx is that the same as the serial#?

Above the Chronometer # on the cetificate is just like this R16803330B9315
884xxxx

To my knowledge, certificates refer to the items they certify. So they should match.

Imagine having a warranty certificate on another chassis No than the one your vehicle has. Would that be appropriate ?

On the other hand, because so many stories go around, I would wait for the most experienced members to speak.

Yes they should match.
If they don't match, it means there is a story to go along with it.
I would value the watch accordingly and not pay extra for the story and the mismatched papers.

I did not know if the chronometer # is the same as the serial # I thought maybe the chronometer # is the movement #. The crazy thing is I have the original sales receipt from 1985 with same jewelry shop /Rolex dealer on the certificate. Maybe the jewelry shop gave the wrong certificat? Oh and it says Rolex Submariner 168033 18kt / Steel on the sales receipt.

The chronometer certificate should match the serial number of the movement it certifies, not the case serial number..

However, Rolex stopped giving actual Chronometer Certs decades ago. For a while they gave combination Guarantee and Chronometer statement certs in the case serial number; the chronometer statement is generic with no data about the movement.

Nowdays they give a card with case number and dangle the red chronometer tag on it to "certify" that it is a chronometer.. cute, but pretty meaningless overall...

So, you gotta be specific about what you want information on..

Hi Larry, so due you think for 1985 this is what Rolex did as far as the chronometer cert # matching the movement serial# not the case? I will have to open it up and check the serial # on the movement. That's what I was asking if the movement serial # and case serial # are the same or not. Thanks for the info Larry

In the green box at the top of the right hand corner the serial number printed there should correspond to the serial between the lugs.

On the warranty paper, like the one partially visible in your pic, at top right it should say 'Chronometre' not 'Chronometer' before the watch seriall number. This is just French for 'timepiece' as far as I know. The older, discontinued chronometer certificates (replaced by the red tag) showing test results had the movement serial on them.
