Shinola Pocket-watch
Any pocket-watch lovers out there?? I have always been a fan since my late grandfather was a conductor on the railroad for 40 years. I have a couple old Illinois and Hamilton examples that I need to get running again. But when I saw that Shinola was going to make their next Limited Edition piece a pocket watch to commemorate Henry Ford I had to have one.
Having purchased several Shinola pieces in the past I was comfortable with their build quality and I love the story, which I think will only get better over time, and the values will reflect that. The other LE pieces that I own have all gone up in value over what I have paid in a short amount of time and I suspect this is no different. Since I was already a member of "The Foundry", their club that those that purchase LE watches can join to get perks, I was allowed to purchase one today, a week before they were cut loose to the public. My guess is that they will all be sold before they ever become available to non foundry peeps, as there are only 1000 available worldwide. I know the thought of paying $1000 for a quartz watch really bothers some people, and it does bother me just a bit, but do yourself a favor. Find a Shinola dealer, take the time to go in and handle their pieces. You will be surprised. Thanks for looking. Here is the photo from the website, should have actual pics to post next week with any luck. |

Looks great! I've been toying with the idea of picking up a Shinola as I am originally from Michigan. It's not really about the money but the fact that all their watches are quartz at this point and I want an automatic version. If/when they come out with one, I will definately add one to my collection.

If they were to move up market and throw a mass produced eta movement in there, they could easily recoup their investment.

Very nice. I do like Shinola. The brakeman is a great looking model and reminds me a bit of the Radiomir.
I don't mind that they are quartz. At least it is a Swiss movement and assembled in the USA. My biggest gripe is that the cases and crystal comes from China. If they could make those here, that would be awesome. |

I agree on all accounts. We can add that to the shinola wish list. There is someone from shinola that is on the forum, maybe they have influence?? I know that with Nomos they started smaller, lower price points and have moved up market with some fabulous pieces. Hope shinola does the same. I flip my shinola runwells often, but this is where I keep my Brakeman stock at. 46mm. This pic is an aftermarket strap to keep the original Wright Brothers strap new. Cyclops under the crystal, like a PAM. Some say ripoff, I say tribute.

Yes, he posted in one of the older Shinola threads. It seemed like he was more than happy to answer any questions and clear up any questions. To me, that really speaks volumes for the company. Shinola has the great story about being American made so I think most people would find it odd that some of their parts are sourced from China (actually, I wouldn't mind seeing an American made movement, though that would a lot more work). I think, in time, they source the case and crystal domestically. With companies like Nordstrom behind them, I definitely think that they will be sticking around. edit: A quick search shows that the dial, hands, and strap buckles are also sourced from China. I hope they're able to do away with that soon. |
