Rolex Cellini Dual Time or more established dress watch??

Hello all,

I'm interested to hear peoples' opinions on the new Rolex Cellini range.

Specifically I like the dual time; both aesthetically and functionally. I tried it on with a local AD and it's fairly spectacular with a great wrist presence.

My main question is this: Should I go for the Cellini with it's €16k or so price tag, or should I spend a little bit more and get a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5196r or a Lange Saxonia Automatic or any high end piece which would qualify as a traditional dress watch?

Looking forward to hearing your views.

Many thanks,

FD

A friend here in the forums mentioned the new Cellini line so I ended up checking them out at the local AD (Jubilee) over the weekend. It's a deceptively heavy watch with absolutely impeccable finish! I had never given the Cellini line a second look but these new offerings are a completely different beast! Gorgeous pieces!

I agree with what has been said. Past Cellini didn't do it for me, but the new line is classically dressy and modern. Something I'd try on.

I would look at a Lange, esp the Richard Lange or Lange 1.

I think your idea of trying PP, Lange, or VC is certainly a good one. I think the Patrimony, which is very doable in your price range, is the quintessential VC in a way that some of the more complicated pieces are for PP or Lange, so it would be a particularly good choice.

If you find you really want the dual time for functional reasons, you should take a look at the JLC Master Hometime, whose second time zone hand can be hidden behind the main hour hand, making for a more simple and elegant appearance when you want it. In gold it will run you the same as, or perhaps slightly less than, the Cellini, with somewhat better finish, and in steel it is considerably cheaper but just as well-made.

In fact I imagine a used Patrimony or Calatrava and a new (or used) Master Hometime would fit in your budget, if you want a pure dress watch and a dressy traveler's watch at once.

I completely agree re: the VC; gorgeous line of dress pieces. The traditionelle small seconds is beautiful. The thing I love about the Langes is the classic feel. Even the arched name 'A Lange & Sohne' on the dial; it almost reminds me of an old grandfather clock face.

I do think the Cellini is very, very close to competing with the aforementioned lines though, certainly in terms of dress watches.

It's a truly gorgeous watch with luxurious dimensions and a beautiful, prominent crown.

Therein lies my dilemma, do I buy the Cellini for €16k or do I buy the Calatrava for €19k. Decisions, decisions...

If you can afford it, I would think the difference worth paying. Plus I imagine you could find a dealer who can get you a lower price, even if not as low as the Rolex.

I agree about Lange— stunning in a wonderfully old world way.

they are nice, but I think other companies make better dress watches. but this is all super subjective, obviously.

I would go Lange 1815 or PP Calatrava of choice in that order. YMMV

Patek would be a popular choice for most since it has dominated the high end dress watch market. More prestigious and easier to sell later.

I think I would also look FPJ for this price range additional to PP. Also, AP Jumbo could be good choice.

Try them on first and then begin to make your decision. I am huge Rolex fan and supporter, but in all honesty, dress watches are not their strong point. The companies mentioned have been much more successful in producing dress watches.

To be honest, the new Cellini's have not been out long enough for anyone to cast an opinion about them. Personally, I think the new Cellini's are beautiful. Patek is out of my price range and if I was looking for a dress watch that retails under $20K CAD, I would probably go for Jaeger and now Cellini.

Patek will be easier to resell if you end up wanting to flip it as they have SUCH an incredible name in dress watches. And rightly so too. I'm a huge Rolex fan though and think that Cellini is gorgeous so that's the way I'd go. You simply LOOK at a watch ..that's it's function..and if every time you do ,you look again just to admire it's design and beauty then it's the ONE to buy. I would have that thought if I was wearing a suit and that Cellini, no problem. It's positively glamorous.

I like the new Cellinis, but patek or lange for me.

Especially the Lange moonphase!

IMO regarding to dress watches PP is always the element of comparison among watchmakers.: "This watch is as good as a PP" or "That watch is even better than a PP..." or whatever, but PP is always the point that anyone wants to compare.

Bang for the buck I think the Cellini is a stunning piece. The pic is my wrist but not my watch. I only had the pleasure of wearing it for a few weeks.

You should get what you want to wear, but I wouldn't say that a Cellini isn't an "established dress watch". the Cellini Prince is historical as well as the King Midas, and Rolex set the standard for the 70's look.

The new Cellini dual-time is one of the best things to hit the market in a long time..

The Cellini's really have some heft and seem to be very well made. I was trying them on last evening. Stunning in person. Certainly a worthy entry in the dress watch arena. Not a Patek, but it doesn't have to be.

I guess you must be looking for compelling objective reasons why you should buy something other than the new Cellini - which you like.
I would be thinking in terms of the following:
Am I concerned about "prestige"? (PP)
Is "quality" my main concern? (PP)
Does it have to be the watch I think is the 'best looking'? (Cellini)
Am I the kind of person who wants the best value for my dollar? (hard to define)
Is resale ever going to be an issue? (PP?)
I'd take the Cellini. I just like Cellinis.

Haha, That sounds like another kind of watch used on the Omega forums
