When do "you" know it is time to flip a watch?
About a year ago I obtained what I thought would be my Grail watch. It was a 116613lb from one of the trusted sellers. I traded a 116520 Daytona black dial. The Daytona only lasted about a year. I also currently own a Breitling B1 and two Datejusts. I have owned the Datejusts and B1 the longest 5 years or so. Honestly, the 116613lb sits in my safe and I wear one of my Datejusts most of the time. As I type this, I probably have not worn the sub for about two weeks. I would like to add a Hublot to my collection. Moving the 116613lb would allow me two do this now. I realize this is a Rolex forum and this would probably not be a popular decision here. However, I am just not wearing The 116613lb. And I like the modern look, feel, and materials used by Hublot. Plus I feel like I could wear the Hublot and be more undercover then when I strap on one of my Rolex watches.
With that said, I still like the 116613lb but I don't feel like it is getting the attention it deserves as it is the most expensive piece in my collection. I lusted after the Daytona and sub for so long, that I think once I finally achieved acquiring them the thrill of ownership did not last too long. But at the rate that Rolex increases their prices I am afraid that if I left the sub go I will not be willing or able to pull the trigger again. Hence, the flippers dilemma ! I have flipped watches before. Sure I miss them, but I have yet to replace any models that I have moved on. Do I continue on my watch journey and flip to the next coveted model? Or do I hold on and wait until I can add another piece to my collection. I am also concerned about collecting too many watches that end up sitting in a safe instead of getting worn and appreciated on a regular basis. Not to mention the up keep costs associated with having to maintain a large collection of high-end watches. I will also add for your consideration that I am not a one watch guy. I like to have at least a few to interchange. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

I would hold on to the LB, at least for a few months before you make any rash decisions about a trade.
You could easily get a Hublot cheap enough (Big Bang) used an not sell or trade any pieces in to get it. It sounds like you love the thrill of the chase more than the acquisition, so even more reason to move slow on this idea. Just my opinion. |

If you don't feel comfortable with it anymore then get rid of it, you can always buy back a pre owned one of you can't afford a new again.
I personally do not like Hublots and would never wear one much less trade a Rolex, but obviously that's an opinion, not really answering your question. However I disagree when you say that a Hublot is more undercover than a Rolex, I think you would Stand out more with it. In any case do what feels right to you and good luck. Get it out of the safe and wear it. The Sub is a great watch. You will get a good value on the sub if you flip it but good luck if you decide to flip the Hublot. Why not flip two of the other watches if you have to do it. The Sub is a keeper.

The sub is a classic. I'd save up for your next but keep the sub.

There is a member here who's signature says "Only love things that are able to love you back". I think that is a very wise approach in general, as all material possessions have very small significance in the grand scheme of things. If you're not feeling the sub, by all means, trade it for a watch you would wear, be it the Hublot or something else. If you regret it, the 116613 will be around for a long time and isn't a rare piece or difficult to replace. Just make sure to buy the Hublot at a deep discount, as it suffers on resale.

If you're not wearing the sub because you don't like it, then by all means flip it. If you're not wearing it because it's the most expensive piece in your collection, that's a different story.

I walked into a Hublot boutique at Marinia Bay before I bought my first Rolex. I saw a Hublot that I liked the look of and the salesman told me it was S$30,000 (£15,000 US$21,850). He immediately offered a 30% discount before I'd had a chance to blink.
If I really wanted a Hublot and intended to keep it, I would buy one. However, if it entered my head for one nanosecond that I might even consider flipping it, then I wouldn't. To my mind at least, that sort of discount without asking tells me that they're way over priced to begin with and it de-values the brand. I guess it's also indicatative that they're not selling particularly well either.

I think most of us here love the chase and after a honeymoon period, there is a little bit of a natural letdown. Then attention turns towards the next acquisition or possibly back to an older watch. But unless there's the deal of the century or a financial emergency, I agree with others and say take your time. In fact, if I'm considering selling a watch , I make myself wear it for a week straight and if the love is no longer there, then it gets moved. Sometimes, the "love" rekindles and all of the good feelings that made you buy it in the first place come back. I do think a Hublot can be less under the radar despite their designs because the public probably doesn't recognize the brand. Everybody has heard of Rolex

I would go more for an AP than Hublot here. I do like some of their designs but APs have more substance, character and history and Hublots are very much now the fashion brand for celebs and footballers and all their wannabes who want to spend more than just on a SS Rolex so depending on which circles you move in they won't always be more under the radar now.
