Have you tried them both on?
There are boutiques for both brands in NYC (and very good ones at that) so it's worth taking your time before deciding. The answer also depends on what else you have in your collection and how this watch might add to it.
You will read lots of knee-jerk "Daytona!" responses here which is to be expected. You will also get a number of responses claiming that the RO is "delicate". Not true - ask people who actually own one rather than people who just have an opinion. And you should also post the same question on the AP forum so you can get another perspective. They might help you with the "delicate" opinion as you should find a greater proportion of posters are also owners. Enjoy the hunt! |

Royal oak no questions asked. The case and bracelet finishing is something to behold. Movement is a looker as well! Simple.

I own both and would say RO hands down, but obviously a totally different price point if talking about the 15202.

Is this your only watch? Do you ever plan on flipping it? What conditions do you plan on wearing it in?

For a daily wearer i would go with the Daytona. RO is more of a secondary dressy watch

Honestly for me well the Daytona is my favorite watch, and again for me they have such a different look seems like apples to oranges, just don't have the attraction to the AP brand I truly am a Rolex guy if that makes sense??

Biased
I sold my Daytona 10 days after I bought it - enjoyed the thrill of the hunt but got bored with it almost instantly, and sold it.
Bought a blue dial AP RO 15300 6 years ago and still have it as a daily wearer. Lots of clever artful and subtle details to it; from movement to bracelet finishing, it is really a spectacular and carefully detailed watch. That's why you have to see it close up in person to appreciate what you're getting with that watch. Pictures just don't do it justice. |

Daytona for me. The APRO is an excellent watch, but the styling does not appeal to me.

Daytona for me since I won't lose money on it. Also, I personally don't think that the RO is Genta's greatest work; It's the Nautilus.

It's Rolex Forums for a reason! Hehe but in all seriousness, I'm with Tom. I tried getting into AP with the Diver and their SS Chrono, but for some reason with the history, fit, finish, durability, pedigree, etc, my Rolexes have stayed while the APs haven't. The Daytona is a classic and I wear a black dial 116520 as my daily wearer. I love that I can trace its pedigree all the way to the pre-Daytona chronographs and it just puts a smile on my face daily. Just my 2 cents, I feel like AP is very hip and trendy (not an insult by any means) while Rolex is more of a slow and steady wins the race type of brand. In either case, life could be a lot worse and which ever you choose, wear it in the best of health!

Finish & Bracelet of the RO is much better than the Daytona. I would go with RO but Daytona is nice as well.

rolex daytona stainless black vs ap royal oak
Between Daytona and RO , i choose Daytona coz it hav chronograph and worth for money than RO .But if i have a chance , i go to ROO. ROO is more beautiful and precious than Daytona SS especially ROO Navy blue and Safari. and yet, it hav date which i require .

given the function, i think it makes more sense comparing the ROC to the daytona, not just an RO. when doing so, you're looking at a lot more money for the ROC, so, it's a pretty tough call between the two.

Completely different watches. All depends on the look and feel you're after. I would prefer the Daytona, but that's me.
