Rolex vs. "Others" in collection

I'll have my first Rolex in a couple weeks.

My wife an I were talking about it, and the others watches already in my collection yesterday. I've always had a rule "new watches get a week". A week worn straight, with no other watches in rotation. I mentioned the Rolex would get a month.

This brought up the question from her "did we waste a bunch of money on other watches and you're only going to wear this one?" She was smiling when she said it, but it is an interesting question.

Some watches in collection start crossing the line into nicer brands, a couple of Heuers, Hamilton, Raymond Weill, and some others that are of less value monetarily but in high in sentimental value.

So what about it? I'm sure I'm not the only one starting with other brands before moving into Rolex - do the others just sit and collect dust, or get wrist time?

I know with myself I sold my Omega SMP to put the funds towards my Rolex, then I sold my remaining watch because my Rolex was the only one getting wrist time.

See how much it takes up your wrist time then evaluate keeping the others (of course sentimental value should be considered)

Most here started with other brands. There are probably a few that didn't. It's part of the journey. Enjoy the chase.

I enjoy having different watches to rotate some will always get more wrist time than others. I would never say buying watches is a waste of money.

Some get worn more than others for sure
I'd use the classic example of bags vs watches if my wife asked if we/I wasted money on more than one watch.

You liked the other watches for a reason. After the honeymoon, you'll be happy to rediscover them. Rolex is great, diversity is better, IMHO.

I just got my first Rolex today, Exp 1. I guess time will tell how much wrist time the omega SMPC will get. I can't get over the fit and finish of Rolex, it's an amazing watch! Enjoy your new watch.

I guess someone (hence your wife) could always say you can only wear one watch and any more than one is superfluous... I like have the "option" to wear one of my many watches. Some of the pieces Id rather keep than realize a loss or deal with the hassle of selling.

I used to have a RW and a Tag but they are long gone now I'm heavily into Rolex... and once you start moving on to the haute horlogerie brands it becomes a thing to hold onto your Rolexes!

All of my watches get wrist time, some more than others. I don't buy or keep watches if I am not going to wear them.

I like well made things, but I'm not a collector. I built up a little collection of various watches in the search for the right one, but, now that I know my 16610 doesn't leave my wrist, I'm selling the rest.

Given what you mentioned regarding other watches in collection, I see you only wearing the rolex.

Here's my advice....get the Rolex. Wear it for am month, as stated. Then, come back to this thread and laugh at how foolish you were to ask such a question before owning a Rolex. Trust me...in a months time.....you'll be in the sales forums unloading the rest of your collection the buy a second one!!

I've always enjoyed many brands and try to give all my watches equal rotation but when you're heavily loaded with a few brands, it's only natural you'd wear the brand more. I still love all my watches though.

My wife knows I like having several - and is more than cool with it. Most of them were gifts from her.

Some of the most sentimental are of the lowest dollar value. One is a nothing particularly special about it Seiko quartz. It was one of the first gifts my wife gave me when we first started dating - and to us at that time, it was definitely a very nice gift. If I had to give up all but one watch in the collection - that's the one I'd keep.

I have a bunch of watches in my collection, including 4 Rolexes. I tend to favor two watches (my all black Y series GMT-II is my absolute favorite, followed by my IWC 3756 GST Perpetual). Some watches get a little wrist time, others get almost none. But I wouldn't get rid of any of them. I bought them because I liked the look of them. I wore each of them for a while, even though some get almost no wrist time now.

I started with a Hamilton way back in the 2000's, got my first Omega when I got married, and that's never going anywhere. Went through Sinn, Lum-Tec, Dievas and Squale before buying a Speedmaster Pro and a vintage Tudor Sub. Those changed everything, and eventually I sold it all except the Speedys and bought a BLNR. At that point there was no going back, even the Tudor is now in a possible trade for a vintage 1680. With the exception of my Speedys (which only see about 10% of my wrist time) I don't see myself wearing any other brands expect Rolex. At least till I can afford a Nautilus or AP RO Jumbo.

My first nice watch was a swiss army infanty model. I stopped wearing it when I bought my first Rolex I gave the swiss army to my father in law and he wears it every day, so I figure it was not a waste.

It is hard to go back to the others after wearing Rolex. Other than my Speedy Pro the other Omega's, Tags, Longines and Cartier are long gone. Now I think I would continue to wear Rolex even if I acquired an A. Lange or other form of haute horology due to the durability factor kind of a double standard or is it?

Once I get happy and comfortable with a watch, it tends to become my daily wearer for extended periods. So I try to stay as narrowly focused as I can on the fewer pieces I love rather than on the many I like in Rolex and other brands.

I sold off some tags and a breitling shortly after buying my first Rolex. They had zero chance of getting any wear. I was smitten.

Now I'm in a similar place again, wondering how many Rolex should go, for I crave PP, ALS, Journe etc.

I've kept all the cheapies that have sentimental value and let go of some mid range players that don't.

Only you can decide what stays and what goes, good luck!

^ Same here. I still have an Omega, some Tags, etc. Used to own a Breitling but it was too big and too heavy for me.

Omega, Tag Heuer, UN, Cartier, Corum, Mont Blanc, Tissot, Movado, High end Citizen (HEQ), Breightling, all in great numbers... All gone. A few remain but very few.

Sold and traded many Rolex as well, but Roles is where it is at for me. I'm even having a hard time deciding if I want a Tudor, or shall I just save up for another Rolex?

Hard to go back. Not much diversity in brands in the stable these days, but I know what I like and I know what I will wear.
