Rolex 18038 Presidential Thoughts???

Hey guys,
I own a TT Sub M series, and a SubC Date. The 18038 has a special place in my heart. It's the watch my dad has worn for years. Thinking of picking up this kind of vintage piece. Thoughts on this particular watch and condition?
I see the band has some a stretch, I'm ok with that. It's a 1985... What price range you think I should be at? Also do you see a major polishing? How are lugs?

Thanks guys!!
Steve

Very nice and clean dd w sharp case. Very little stretch on the band to boot.
Prices have expanded for awhile on these, especially ones in good condition.
Anything under $9.75k is a decent deal.

watch looks really good and is complete. Should be in the upper 9's....maybe low 10's

It's a nice one, will be in style for 1,000 years. IMHO under $10K is a steal, I'd go as high as $11K.

There is a little wear on the bracelet, no show stopper at all, so obviously the watch is worn. You cannot wear a watch and don't get small scratches on the bracelet and case. Pictures show a very nice clean watch, without any scratches. Therefore it must have been recently polished, but this would not concern me, nicely done.

I would hold off and get a 11, it is heavier and worth the extra premium IMO. If I had to throw a number this would be 8500. Maybe I am being soft on the price. I am a little off with the current going rates on this piece.

What do you mean when you say 11?

Looks pretty nice although as others have said bracelet is a little stretched. That's tough for the PM models because to replace the bracelet would cost as much or more than the entire watch. As a point of reference, in 2005 I bought a 1980 with box and papers and zero stretch for $8200. It had been in the safe for years.

That's a very nice DD. Case is strong and the bracelet is not bad at all with many years of service left in it. Single quick set but I don't find that to be an issue at all. They are not that difficult to find, even in good shape and the comps that I've seen for sale recently were around 10 to 11K.

With 11 meaning 6 digit reference. These 6 digit DD's are newer and have a solid bracelet, upgraded clasp and polished lugs.
The feeling is so much different between the hollow and solid bracelet that it is worth to save up more to buy a newer one.
I had my 18238 bracelet modified to a solid one, just for the feel.
It's like two different watches. Did not want to flip my DD so this was a nice alternative.
You may consider a 18238 (double quickset) instead of the 18038 which is a single quickset. That makes setting day and date a lot quicker but looks the same.

I'm a fan of the single quick if you can find it. Watch continued to look the same even once it went double quick through the late 90s. Excellent value IMO.

There's a lot of stretch on that bracelet ... the bracelet is where most of the $$ is, and it's expensive ti replace. So, I would look for a better example.

ensure you double check the band, i cannot see the clasp, i can tell from the papers your watch originally came with a leather band only, i am not saying it is aftermarket or fake just trying to ensure it all smooth for you regards

Nice watch with set 10K sounds about right. Nothing wrong with the 18038 for mine. Prices can climb quicker with the 6 digit reference.
