Rolex Explorer 5500 relume? redial?
Hi Guys,
Checking out this 5500, have some questions. Will have more pictures soon. Notes: 1. 5500 listed within lugs 2. 1530 movement 3. 1002 listed on caseback 4. Serial is 86xxxx (6 digits) 5. Precision dial 6. lume is not totally covering numbers <--- 7. Band is a service replacement last service was Oct. 2013 by the same shop selling it. I trust the shop as they are very well known here but they certainly wouldn't have verified the originality of the dial. Also the lume has a more greenish tint rather than the cream / tan I would have expected. |

These are usually redialled Air Kings, and without original papers it's almost impossible to prove otherwise. Unless you're a vintage expert with a forensic interest in getting to the bottom if this, better pass. The hand covering the coronet is not a good sign, either.

Yeah i took the pic myself in person, should have been more careful about the hand placement, I'm headed back tomorrow to take more pictures.
I had the owner open the case back, verfied the 1530 movement and the case back. Looks like it was regularly serviced, i think i saw 4 date markings etched in the back. its a Service shop, AD for Patek, pretty legit. What about the 1002 caseback on the 5500 case? is that very common? I've seen 1601 casebacks on 1603 DJ's from 60's and 70's. Was this normal for the 34mm bunch as well? |

Caseback isn't a problem, it's normal. The dial is 99.9% of the issue here.

For this SN and movement caliber, I think this should have a super precision gilt dial.
