This was an expensive afternoon..
A week or two ago, I got a bit obsessed over the idea of a 14060M. The look of a non-COSC Sub dial, no cyclops, no date, is the most classic Rolex image (for me, your taste may be different). I started shopping around, and was referred to a local AD who had a Z serial non-COSC in stock and offered me an excellent discount after a bit of negotiating (and even to ship it out of state to a friend to avoid tax). I agreed last night to go by the store today to close the deal.
Then I made the mistake of going by the Sales Corner on TZ before I went to bed, a nightly ritual. A Z serial non-COSC was up for sale for $3400 ($1100 below the agreed price from the AD). The seller was the guy who sold me my Speedy Pro, I knew his description would be fair. What to do, what to do.. I contacted the seller on TZ and took the watch. It was too good a deal to pass up - but I felt that I owed it to the AD to see if there was something else we could do, since I told her I'd buy a watch from her today (besides, I told myself that I now had an extra $1100 in my pocket). When I went by the store she had an Explorer I that she agreed to give the same discount % on. I thought it would be unique to buy two expressions of the same movement, and two classic watches (and the two cheapest sports Rolexes..) on the same day. But the Explorer was a D serial, so it was a couple of years old. And..the 36 mm case was pretty small on my 7.5" wrist (it's funny how I wore a 34 mm Seiko for a decade without thinking about it, but now that I'm used to 40mm, 36mm seems small). So...I ended up leaving with an M-serial 16610 - it was a two Sub day. When I got obsessed with Rolex a couple of months ago, I set a goal of collecting an example of all of the SS sports/tool watches - of course I assumed that would be over the course of a few years as funds became available. But one thing leads to another, something attractive pops up online, and decisions seem to make themselves. I think I've gone a bit too far, too fast - today made me scratch my head and ask myself what I was thinking. It's time to take a break - no more TZ Sales Corner before bed (or TRF FS/WTB). That said, I'm really looking forward to those Subs, especially the 14060M. I wonder if there's a twelve step program for this addiction.

Congrats on your two Subs! I'm the same way about the FS forums... I have to lay off or I'll start getting tempted to flip. Post lots of pics!

My suggestion for a 12-step Program
1. Donate all your watches to TRFers who can't afford one. 2. Give all your money to me! 3. Move to Haiti 4. Wonder why you listened to my advice and got yourself into this 5. Realized that a Rolex addiction wasn't so bad after all 6. Get on a raft and come back to the USA 7. Claw your way back to financial success 8. Start rebuilding your Rolex collection 9. Continue building your Rolex collection 10. Rejoin TRF 11. Apologize to TRF for ever trying to give up Rolex in the first place 12. Find this tread and berate me for suggesting such a stupid 12-step program!

But Haiti is so humid..
It would be easier if I had the Subs to play with. Unfortunately the 14060M won't be here until Monday (there are disadvantages to living in a remote mountain town), and I have to pick up the 16610 in L.A. next Wednesday (one of the downsides of shipping out of state to save sales tax is that you actually have to pick it up out of state). I'll just pine away over the weekend.. Thanks for the thoughts, everybody. When I get the subs here, I'll take some photos, including a family shot with the 16613 and the SD - I'm only an LV away from having a complete collection of Subs (well, there's also a COSC 14060M, and Anastasios has a nice one for sale; hmm...). In brief, "COSC" refers to the two lines at the bottom of the dial: Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified The no-date Submariner, the 14060M, was one of the last Rolexes that didn't have those two lines on the dial, until they were added sometime during the Z-serial run, i.e. in 2006-2007. Officially, that means that Rolex began to submit the movements for accuracy certification, i.e. as "official chronometers". Since the movement didn't change, many believe that it's pure marketing, and some of us love the old dials as clean and uncluttered. I picked up a Z-serial non-COSC 14060M as the last of a line of clean dial, no date, no cyclops Submariners dating back to the Sub's inception in the early '50s.

And the wallet is shrinking! Stop the madness!
Well, maybe after the next one.. Thanks, Lisa. Btw, the Expy II is still my most-worn Rolex, by far. I seriously love that watch.
