Guys, help me decide

OK
I hope you are not sick of me yet.
I just need some help here, I am pretty sure I know what I am getting
BUT still would like to hear what the masses here think.

The first watch I ever bought myself was a used SS DJ that I still own and doubt Ill ever sell! Its at the RSC now and I am going to let me GF wear it when it gets back till I get her a midsize (she said thats what she wants as a wedding present)

I am buying this watch first and foremost to wear BUT with Rolex ending so many models now its also an investment of sorts.

Anyway I have narrowed it to two choices, both are NIB and the most recent models.
Please vote on which you would pick and why you would pick it if you were in my shoes. (PS I am not a diver, pilot nor do I travel tons)

1) Rolex Sea Dweller, I have LOVED this watch forever! When friends were buying subs I held out and bought my used DJ as I got it for a great price it it was nice for all around wear and I didn't want to settle for a Sub nor could I find a SD in my price range at that time. I think its a beautiful watch, I think its the finest example of a classic sports watch out there and I have found a good deal on it.

2) Rolex GMT II Pepsi, very cool watch and I like the 24 hr hand. I found one NIB with the 3186 movement. I like it, it looks nice and Id love to own one someday, the 24 hr hand is a nice feature as well. I know there weren't a ton with the 3186 but it just doesnt seems as multipurpose as the SD (stands out more for dress etc due to the color)

I am buying one now and know Ill find the other second hand in a couple years for sure if not sooner (I also am getting an Exp II before they change it but thats a few years away I think)

Anyway based on that what do you think I should get and why?
I already have the deal worked out and the seller is just waiting for me to tell them which I want.

Oh yes, is open papers any advantage when it comes to service or anything? This is my first NIB Rolex so I do like that the papers are open but wonder if it matters beyond that and also if I should fill them in when I get it.

Thanks and a BIG thanks to the forum!
I have always loved nice watches, especially Rolex watches but
this board has turned me into a junkie!

It seems you like the SD more. Get that one. The all black will go with more attire and can be wore in more settings that the GMT Pepsi dial.

However, if you travel extensively, the GMT Master II, with it's quick set 12 hour hand, which moves independently of the 24 hour, minutes and seconds is very convenient.

They are different enough that when you try them on, one will feel like this is "the one".

PERSONALLY, I would go for the SD!!

Reason being, it sounds like you are contemplating the purchase of one of the LAST runs produced.

For that reason, the original SD's can only become more collectible and respectively hold their re-sale accordingly.

Stan.

Yogi, if I were in your position I would get the SD. It scratches two itches IMO by looking and feeling a lot like a sub, and having the novelty of the HRV. Its a nice thing to have in a collection and to be honest, as a diver I never go deep enough to use the valve. As a tool it is outside of the scoop of recreational divers, but it is a great conversation piece. As far as the investment criteria, I would expect both watches to retain their value, but due to their availability on the market, I wouldnt expect the market value to rise enough to consider it an investment. Personally, I dont like sport watches with suits so I'd be inclined to say you are better off wearing the datejust for such occasions. Just my $0.02, you cant go wrong with either piece...

Bo
I knew exactly where your vote would go!
I don't know I do not drink Pepsi but for
some reason the Pepsi GMT grew on me
since coming here to the boards (sorry
the coke and rootbeer do nothing for me)
Anyway SD it is!
Thanks guys, now just time to send a message
letting the member here know which way I was
going. Thanks to TRF I have found a NIB deal like
I could NEVER find anywhere else from someone
with a track record of MANY great sales on here
over 6 mths so I feel pretty confident in my choice.

Oh yeah and don't worry I do not purchase any watch
with the plans of making money on them BUT I like
that its very rare you lose anything with a Rolex!

I wish the SD, Sub and YM had a 2nd timezone hand
as I really like that BUT it will just make me get a Exp II
or GMT II Pepsi quicker.

JJ, I plan on getting both but finances, the economy,
redoing a house and saving for a engagement ring take
priority. The SD is going to be first, for me it should as
it is what truly made me want a Rolex.

Now if a smily Kiwi who happens to look like Telly Savalas
wants to buy me a birthday, christmas, new years or wedding
present early I would not turn you down ;)

Who loves ya, Baby!

I voted SD because it is a beautiful do it all, subdued watch that can be worn with anything, anywhere. Plus, no ugly cyclops.

I agree big time there!
I think of I get an Exp II white face I will REALLY look into
getting a crystal without a cyclops I just think on certain
watches they cyclops gets in the way. I like it fine on my
DJ but not on sports watches (thats just my )

Sd

Being so close to the Great Lakes maybe the SD makes the most sense.
You should ask your fiance to choose as she obviously has great taste!
Happy 4th

SD Good Choice

According to Bo and the other SD experts here, the SD was made in numbers smaller than the Pepsi. The Pepsi may turn out to be less collectible than the SD, or even the Coke or black bezel GMT. As far as the Pepsi w/ 3186 calibre: It currently retails for $5750.00 plus tax, and I have noticed that some people on TRF are having trouble selling them for $6000.00. Given that there's alleged to be a rush on Pepsis now ("OMG, it's been discontinued!" etc.), they don't seem to be commanding a noticeable premium, even with the 3186.

In any case, the SD is very groovy.

Jeremy, keep in mind that you can purchase bezels for the GMT II for a different look. From the sound of it, your preference is the SD. Both are great models, best of luck in your decision. Happy 4th!

Between the two, I would go for the SD.

Reasoning: I agree with all that's been said however; IF future valuation is any consideration collectors like the visual. The 16710 with a 3186 movement is a wonderful watch, but nobody sees the movement.

Congrats in advance!

Sounds like you need a SD. I have/had both and if I didn't have a Sub, I would keep my SD. IMHO, if you can handle how tall it is (my old one used to get banged on doroways like there was some sort of magical force drawing it to the frame), I think it is the best looking face of all Rolex sport models that have dates. Whatever you do don't buy any of the hype about collectability for either the SD or the GMT. They are both abundent. Buy the one you love.

Oh trust me I know and am buying it as I want it NOT because I think
it will be worth money in the future....

I am going with the SD, I will get the GMT in the future. If its used thats fine
but since I have always dreamt of the SD I should get it while I can get in
NIB even if it is not from an AD. All the cards are open so that should be
good.

That's a tough call... if faced with only owning one though, I would probably go with the SD. In all reality though, you can't go wrong either way.
