Is the Submariner Getting the New GMT-Master Features?
Greetings,
I just got done checking out one of the new GMT-Master pieces at my local Reeds and I'm very excited about what I saw. It wasn't the GMT that I was excited about, actually; it was the new features it had, combined with the rumor (relayed by the salesperson) that the Submariner will be getting the same features very soon. Those features are:
Is it true that the Sub is getting these things? If so I'll be trading mine in to get the new one. And that brings me to my second question: is it easy to trade a stainless sub in for a new model stainless sub? I've had mine for a year and a half and bought it from Torneau in NYC (and I have all the paperwork for it). Thanks guys! |

Daniel, the transition to the new Submariner has in a real sense already started. Rolex unveiled at Bazel this year two new versions with maxi and ceramic bezel. In white and yellow gold, these references seem to be the first of the new breed.
If history repeats itself as with the GMT, a TT version followed by the SS version will follow. This chronology has been put forth by those supposedly "in the know". Of course nothing with Rolex is telegraphed very far in advance, but it's as good a bet as anything. Selling might be preferable to trading. You might get a lot more. |

Wow, the new Subs have the maxidial and the ceramic bezel! That's great. How about the solid bracelet links and the new clasp? Do they have those features too?

Right now it's going to cost you $27k to get these "upgrades".. Might be in the SS models in a couple of years... By then who knows what the base price for a SS Sub will be...... Better save that spare change...............

Wow, it can be a couple years before the features on the high-end subs make it to the stainless version? That's not cool...:( Especially if it's not going to include the clasp that's on the new Daytona and GMT-Master.
The one thing I dislike about my Sub is the clasp, and having solid links would be awesome as well. If they can upgrade these pieces and add a ceramic bezel to the mix I will definitely be upgrading. I just can't wait for these things to come to the SS Sub... |

Daniel, one thing that we love to do on this forum is speculate on upcoming changes. Wait till Jan.-Feb., 2009. Some of us get so excited about rumors, lies and misconceptions that we can't sleep until Basel World. I'm one, I know. Welcome and hang around until then. As stated above, you've got a good chance that you'll get want at Basel'09.

Imho, the updated SS Sub Date comes in 2010. As stated, only Rolex knows, though.

I don't think it will take that long .....
I don't think it will take that long for Rolex to put out the Stainless version. It did not take years between the gold and two tone GMTIIC and the Stainless.
I will definitely get one of the new ones but I think I will also be keeping my older Subs as well. I am more interested in the new Sub than the DSSD. |

From Watch Time August 2006 (more than a year after the YG model release): "If and when the improvements will be integrated in the steel version of the GMT-Master II is one of Rolex's well-guarded secrets..." It was the next year. |
