Submariner Purchase Advice
Hey everyone,
New to the forums and enjoying all the advice. I'd like to purchase a watch to mark the birth of my first kid and hopefully pass it on to him. I have a decision to make-to get the watch from an AD or from a friend of a friend who works in the jewelry industry (essentially gray market). I would like to purchase the no-date sub, 114060. The AD has quoted me $7,200 out the door (sales tax around me is 9%) with some more room to move. Let's assume $7,000 out the door. While my friend's contact would probably be able to get me the same watch for 20% off list, around $6,000. If the prices hold up, I'm inclined to go gray considering that Rolexs have a reputation for having great quality control. I'm wondering whether there's a "happy medium" that I can bring back to the AD that won't seem too unreasonable. I would appreciate any advice. I haven't personally talked to the gray market dealer but my friend has vouched for him. Thanks much. |

6000 is a great price new assuming it comes with warranty. Trusted sellers here are in the mid 6000 for new. I wouldn't blink at 114060 for that price.

ADs near me will not discount any SS Sub models currently due to demand.

In Sydney you probably wouldn't get anything off at all at an AD on an SS Rolex. Not a cent. $6k USD is a bargain.

20% would be quite difficult to achieve in my opinion.

Agreed $6000 out the door is an excellent price, assuming it is new w/ warranty and the real deal.

The 114060 is a great watch and value. Good luck on you quest. Mid 6K is the best from our Trusted Sellers that I know of. I have two friends that purchased in the last year and that is where they came in. Best deal is the slightly pre-owned for around 6K. My 114060 is one of my all time favorites.

114060 is the next on my list when budget permits. i would either go the AD way...or through s trusted seller here. Unless the friend of your friend can sell you that watch BNIB with warranty and stickers intact.

I was in your exact position a last Friday. I struggled over the decision and ended up buying from a local AD for $7200 out the door. I decided that the extra $600-700 over a trusted seller was worth it. I now have a relationship with the owner of this store and my name is on the warranty. If I need anything regarding the watch, I feel better going to the AD to address it because I bought it there. Good luck with your decision and enjoy it. It 's a fantastic watch!

Call up the Wynn in Vegas they'll ship to you no sales tax that's where I get my watches, both sub and Daytona were hassle free and a great experience

$6000 BNIB from an AD is a great price. Trusted sellers are mid 6's right now.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. First, it's good to know what the going prices are (i.e., to figure out whether something sounds to good to be true). I don't yet know whether the friend-of-a-friend price is solid or out-the-door. Since this will be my first Rolex, a $500 or so premium to go AD seems to make sense.
Would $6,000 out-the-door brand new make sense if there's no warranty. I'm not familiar with repair prices, but if I'm stuck with a repair bill, would that discount be a fair price for the risk I'm taking? |

If I could get it for that price, do you think it would be worth it provided that the watch is brand new but comes with no warranty? I'm not familiar with Rolex service prices. Said differently, would 6,000 be a fair price for something that's (i) genuine, (ii) brand new, and (iii) comes with no warranty? |

If that were the case I'd go with a trusted seller since the cost of a service via RSC is worth more than the ~$500 saving within 5 years.

Just spend the extra money and buy brand new no worries from the AD. Especially for the special reason your buying the watch and its your first Rolex. It will have a five year warranty as well.

Trusted seller here on TRF like JustRolexes,DavidSW,OCRolexguy just to name a few that get repeated top notch references or an AD. Get prices from the trusted sellers, easy and you'll get responses in minutes, then do a comparison to the AD price.
If you are saving 1k with the trusted sellers than go that way. If it's $500 diff from the AD then you can make a business decision which way you want to go. Btw with a bnib from trusted sellers, you can have your name on the card at times and the warranty is same as Ad..5 yrs. That would be it. Trusted sellers here are responsible and stand behind their sales and products. It's my preferred way of buying rolexes and so far it's all been great. My first was from an AD in Vegas and the experience was the same. So save your money !! |

If I'm getting a watch to mark the birth year of my son, then I would get it new at an AD with all the proper documentation, new box, etc. To me, it's more sentimental and I'm doing everything right since it will eventually go to my son.

If there is no warranty then it's not a good deal. If it does come with warranty then jump on it. If it doesn't have warranty I would either buy from a trusted seller here or go ad.

Congrats on the 114060 I purchased mine for $6900 OTD from an AD. Plus I got a free appraisal, sizing and enjoyment of buying Rolex at an AD.
