Patek 5146 vs 5327
I normally don't post much, but a relative recently asked me about a few different Patek models, and so I wanted to ask you guys for your thoughts. Here are the 3 models he's considering:
5146/1G-001 (bracelet model) 5146R-001 5327G-001 So I know it's hard to predict what will happen in the future, but he's wanting to know which one would be more collectible (holds better value, harder to find) in the future if he wants to pass it down to one of his kids/grandkids. He'll probably wear the watch only occasionally. I don't know much about Pateks, but my initial thought is that the 5146 (any metal) has been around for a long time and will be easy to find in the future. The 5327 is a new model, has a beautiful blue dial, but not sure if its production is limited. I also realize the 5327 is double the price of the 5146. Any thoughts about these models? Thanks, Brian |

Apples to oranges trying to compare an AC to a PC.
FWIW, I'd always choose a perpetual, especially for an heirloom piece. |

Thanks for the input so far! I too would choose a PC over an AC.
I forgot to mention, but he has several Patek (though I'm not sure which ones). He is also looking for current production, or a piece that can be purchased brand new from an AD or boutique. Is the 5960 worth considering (not the steel version)? |

Aesthetics aside, do you prefer an annual calendar with chrono? If your friend is looking for a generational piece, I'd stick with something more classic. History may not judge the 5960 kindly, but who really knows? |

The 5327 is a new reference introduced this year and no one knows how long Patek will produce it. However going by its predecessors, the 3940 and 5140, I expect it to have a relatively long production cycle. None of these watches are going to be rare watches, unless your relative is a Patek "mega-collector" and can have Patek make a custom-design watch, with a unique dial or unusual case metal (e.g. SS case 5146 or 5327). Best advice is to always buy a watch for your own personal enjoyment and not think of it as an investment. I would recommend that your relative try on all 3 watches and choose the one that he likes the best. |

Why didn't you point your relative to the forum? He could himself obtain the best advice possible, unless he knows that there are some people who are polluting it...

I thought 5235 is not a modern day collectible piece. It is not doing very well in the secondary market.

as far as value retention the only rule that I use is "buy 90% of your watches within 3 brands: Rolex, Patek and AP". Buy whatever you want with the 10% remaining. And within those 3 brands buy what you like, period.
5146g is the perfect daily office (kind of a beater) , love it I would buy a 5070 or 5170 before a Perpetual Of course if funds are not an objection a Perpetual Chrono Cheers !

Thanks again for all responses! I'll reach out to him and fill him in on the suggestions (he's not really into online discussion forums) He'll be happy to hear everyone's thoughts.
I'll look into the 5327 some more. It seems more exciting to me - maybe because it's new and more complicated. But first I'll see which one he likes best since he'll be wearing it for a long time before handing it down. |
