Incoming - sub date -

I was inclined to add a Diver to my collection and settled on a 5.7 mil 1680. Having previously owned 116600 and 16610 I opted for something different.

This is my first 4 digit and I'm enjoying the vintage side of things. I was apprehensive about the old slow beat movement, but the 1575 has exceeded my expectations. This one has undoubtedly been worn most of its life and I plan on using it as a daily watch.

It was in need of a good cleaning.

That's better, Love the "Top Hat"

Beautiful, really stunning! If it is not to much what would a watch like this would be worth, even a range is fine or you could PM me with that info. I am just curious, I love this reference but I really have a hard time getting a handle on vintage pricing.

Thanks for the compliment. As far as price goes there is a wide range that varies based on condition and originality. I typically browse the forums/bay for a bit once I hone in on something to gauge the current market. I like to wear my watches so I don't usually get into the pricey mint examples. That being said, my 1680, with toothpaste dial and service hands would place it on the lower end of the spectrum.

what an awesome looking watch! Love it, wear it in good health.

How does a feel as a daily? Does it feel robust, or a bit fragile compared to your old 116610?

Let me attempt to answer your question. Firstly, there is nothing, absolutely nothing fragile or delicate about the 1680. I plan to wear it with the intended purpose in mind. Simply, it's a well built tool, and I don't think I could destroy it if tried.

Comparing a 1680 to the SD4K 116600 is tough because I feel they are totally different watches. My overall impression of the SD4k was:
-Very pretty
-Well proportioned
-Superbly engineered

It wore nicely, and I loved the matte dial. While I'm sure that it's extremely durable, I was more careful and cautious while wearing it. I mean, if I crack that ceramic bezel it's going to be expensive and time consuming to fix.

Conversely with the 1680:
Ding the bezel - who cares
Scratch the plexi- ^ /polywatch

My negatives for the 1680 are the lack of quickset date and my fear of water ingress on a vintage piece. I plan to have annual pressure testing and use it as a diver. It's still a Sub, right?

For me it boils down to comfort (for a daily) and the light weight 1680 wins. After a long day the heft of the SD4k would start to annoy me. If I'm in the mood for a heavy watch I prefer PM.

I also side with the 1680 because I have it in my head that modern automatics are an anachronism...

I think I'm reading too much TRF!
