New SeaDweller and Submariner
With my wife's blessing I put my name on the list for the SD43 as a gift for my 50th next month. I presently have a Sub Date that was the watch I remember wanting since I was a teen.
Here's my question - are these too similar? Do folks out there have multiples of what the general public would consider to be essentially the same watch? 16610 and 116610, or multiple versions of the SeaDwellers? Thanks |

Man they look similar but feel oh so different. I love the SD43! I think that fact that it's not as bulkly as a DSSD is what sets it apart

There are plenty of folks that have both the Sub and SD or multiples of each, but they're too similar for me to keep both. I'd flip the Sub, unless it has sentimental value, towards something else like a GMT, chronograph or dress watch. Happy birthday and congrats in advance on the new SD. It's a beauty.

Personally, I wouldn't keep both, only the one that sings to me the most (SD in my case).
I am currently going through a similar dilemma between the SD50 and the YM 116622 platinum dial. In the end I've decided to keep both because there are enough differences in my view to make them look and wear like two distinctive watches. The SD50 and the Sub 116610LN however look too similar IMHO to justify keeping both and not trying another model and colour instead. |

I think if you had a Submariner instead of a Sub Date, then I'd say keep both. However, perhaps consider picking up the new SD43, make sure you really like it, then sell/trade your Sub Date, and look for an Explorer, GMT, or a chronograph (Daytona or Speedy Pro). Enjoy your new watch!

The diver is a very popular style of watch here on TRF...lots of guys have multiple variants of subs and SD's. For good reason, they're great watches.
I think your best bet is to add the new SD and see if YOU think they're too similar...that's the only opinion that really counts. |

Not too similar. You'll be very happy with both.

I personally have both Dial variants of the DSSD and if I were to choose to focus on having a collection exclusively comprised of DSSD's there's another 2 I could add. There are people who have every dial variant of vintage Subs and or Sea-Dwellers or Mil Subs. That's how collections come into being. It starts with one then two and so on. What constitutes the collection is very personal and nobody else's business. |

I have both the 116600 and 126600 Sea Dwellers and plan to keep both for now.
I'd say wear both for a while and see if worthwhile hanging onto them. Or if it becomes obvious either will sit unused, move it on. |

I appreciate everyone's thoughts. I'm planning on keeping both at least for now. Of course I'm assuming I'm going to love the SD43 even with my 6.5" wrists.

Rolex dive watches are very popular amongst watch enthusiasts, so having multiples is not a bad thing. The Submariner is iconic and something you aspired to since your youth. Sure, there are similarities with the SD43, but I think different enough to keep both. I have a 5 and 6 digit Sub and have no issues keeping them. If you are a one watch person then that may change the perspective, but be sure the SD43 fits you right at the AD before selling your Sub. Good luck. Cheers!

I reccomend you keep both, you can wear one on a rubber strap. You don't want to get rid of the Sub and later regret it.

I wouldn't keep both personally. To me, they're essentially the same watch in different sizes, and I'd rather just have two different watches.

Having read your post on another forum, I saw that this is a pre ceramic Sub for the other watch. Definitely different enough to keep both for now... Maybe you'll find Sea Dweller too tall for some shirts, want a smaller watch, etc.

I'm in somewhat the same position, but different at the same time. I just got a SD43 this past Thursday after receiving the call from the AD on Wednesday. It will be stablemates with my DSSD, which I love!
So, I don't see similarity being an issue. The SD43 will wear bigger than your Sub, much like my DSSD wears bigger than my new SD43. They are both stainless, have a black dial, and a ceramic bezel, but past that the differences are enough to distinguish them from each other. |

Obviously personal choice but I believe they are too close in appearance. I would look at flipping the black sub date for the 116610 LV, the Hulk. Great appearance difference and still stay in the sub family.

To "watch guys" they're very different watches. To the general population, basically the same watch.

Too similar for me unless the Sub is a different variant, like hulk or bluesy.

A lot of members here have large collections, for them I believe there is enough difference to warrant keeping both.
However for someone like myself with only 2 watches, I'd need a much larger difference to be truly content. If you keep the Submariner and add the SeaDweller and you may be happy for a while but I'd be concerned that may not last. Just my honest opinion. Good luck whatever you choose.

Get SD 43 and keep Sub at least for time being. Later after honeymoon period with SD you can decide wherever Sub is redundant or not.
