Need Advice on my first Rolex

So this could be a typical GMT vs Sub post, but I'll try to make it a bit more personal. I do NOT want to sell this watch.... ever... My son was born last year, and I had it in my mind that I would buy a Rolex when he was born, but it just wasn't in the cards. Well I've moved heaven and Earth, and I'm in a place to pull the trigger.

I am in tax planning and financial advisory services. So I don't want anything TOO flashy. (It's bad to look like you make more money than your clients - trust me that is not the case!) We are pretty business casual, and a comfortable environment. But I want a watch that will look equally well in the office as it does on the weekend in the pool, at the beach, on a boat, traveling, etc. I don't travel a ton, maybe a few times a year for work, but nothing crazy.

I love the SubC no date for many obvious reasons 114060. Glidelock, clean dial and bezel, timeless look, brushed bracelet, etc.

I am also looking at the GMT Master II 116710LN (black bezel, green hand). Green is my favorite color, and I love the subtle splash of color on this one while also maintaining an overall appearance very similar to the sub. The Polished center links could be a pro or a con. They are beautiful, but I know they are scratch magnets (and MAY stand out a bit more... could be bad for what I want). The date function is handy, but nothing I am dying for.

Also, the sub is probably $1,000 less, but that isn't a huge deal. Like I said, I don't intend to sell the watch, so the extra cost isn't a HUGE deal.

Personally, I always opt for a date when it's possible...so I would have to say you go with plan C...and get an Sub Date!

Both are good choices and you can have the pcl's brushed for little or no cost( by trusted sellers). That said, I don't think that you'd ever tire of the sub. It's timeless & the foundation of most collections. I'd start there. Good luck!

I prefer Sub Date, but of your choices, the GMT.

I always liked the GMT, and for awhile it was actually my number one choice for a new Rolex. However, when you're running with one piece as a daily wearer, I think that the PCLs on the GMT are really a turn off. Every piece I see has tons of scratches on the PCLs, making the watch look particularly worn. For that reason, I'd get the Sub.

Since this is a forever watch with the thought of passing it on, I have to vote for the GMT. The date is very useful and you never know all the adventures you and yours may go thru were additional time zones will be helpful.

I've had both and flipped both. I'd go with the SubC. IMHO it's the perfect single Rolex. The lack of date doesn't bother me because I can't see the date anyway. What you could consider is getting an older 14060 and the GMTIIC. I have a 16610LV and it is very comfortable despite not having the glide clasp. IMHO the GMTIIC easy link is more comfortable than the SubC with glide clasp.

The good news is there isn't a wrong answer.

I am partial to GMTs but for your particular situation, namely that you desire to pass this watch on to your son, I would go with the more universally classic Sub.

114060, the clean, sleek classic. The good news is that both watches are easily available, so if you regret the decision later you can flip for the other without any issues.

I'd say get the one with greater complications (the GMT); this will give you access to both date and multiple time zones. I agree though that the alternative of a Sub Date would make a lot of sense. I find that unless I keep the GMT on my wrist it can be a pain to set. For an only watch I really need a date on the face. Additionally the overly large proportions on the Sub C don't do it for me.

I would have said the Sub if it was a date version. That's an essential complication for me. I'm a big GMT fan, but for a classic like the Sub the only GMT I'd take over it would be the Pepsi.

Between those two, I think the no date Sub has the edge for being both classic and ever-so-slightly more versatile. On the other hand, the PCLs really aren't bad at all once you get them on your wrist.

I'll throw another option out to consider. What do you think about the Explorer I? I have a 214270 that is my favorite Rolex watch in my current collection. It's so under the radar that it goes with everything and never gets noticed. You could start with a 214270 as the pass-me-down timepiece, but then add a 116610LV (Hulk) down the road to satisfy your love of green and desire for a Sub. I think this route is worth considering if you want to go unnoticed today and still have a fun watch in the future.

This is a tough one that's been asked over and over here. Sounds like you are doing your research and taking your time. The good news is there is no wrong answer!! I did the EXACT same with my dilemma bw these two babies. At the end of the day for me at least it came down to two things (one much more than the other)- 1) PCLs or no PCLs- for me that is the main difference. I understand some don't like PCLs BUT I love them!! It gives the watch just the right amount of pop that I want. 2) the Bezel- the GMT bezel is more busy than the sub. That was not a big deal for me though. The no date sub is classic but the GMT just screams classic Rolex to me as much as any watch out there. Obviously I prefer the GMT but you'll love either for a long time. Good luck and early congrats!!!
