Rolex Nickname Conundrum

I've been thinking about Rolex nicknames lately. Some of them like Paul Newman and Polar I like. Pepsi and Coke have been around long enough that they really seem to fit the watches that they describe. But, for some reason, the comic book names Smurf, Hulk, Kermit and Batman just make my flesh crawl. Your thoughts?

Forgive me! Perhaps I should've done a search.

Never thought how stupid the 'Hulk' moniker is until I read this. Seriously.

The nicknames may be ridiculous but they give non-WIS' a connection with the watch. This can't be said of the model number.

Hulk is horrible but a comparative compliment relative to Smurf.

Dislike all of the nicknames.... no clue who or why anyone started doing that. Don't particularly like "rollie" either.

Strange, I don’t like Rollie either, but I have no problem with Caddy.

Why would you call your Rolex a ‘caddy’? Isn’t a caddy someone who carries your golf bats?

These absurd nicknames make me vomit a little inside my mouth every time I read one. The only acceptable names are Sub, D-Blue, YM, SD, DD, SkyD, DJ, etc.

My thoughts are that the nicknames are a result of child like fan boys Comic-Con fantasies.

Most if not all serious Watch collectors that I know wouldn’t use them

Just when you post about these watches, don't use these nicknames. I never liked these nicknames but what can you do? People still gonna refer like that. I myself use LV, LVC, BLNR, BLRO...when I talk about them.

You make a thread about it but no one is gonna follow your request. This is not the first time member mention about it.

I just call them by numbers. You get used to it if you hang around here long enough.

214270, 16570, 12470, 16710, 114060, etc. Those are just some that I own.

I don't use the comic book nicknames, or smurf (full body shiver). However, someone in another, recent thread referred to the black dialed 116500 as Vader...I'm kinda drawn to that one, but that might be the Sith in me coming out!

Often I have bad memories. Somehow I always manage to remember these Rolex numbers. I remember Casio style reference numbers too.

116509 is not Vader? Vader name felt better with 116509. 116500 is more like Storm Trooper to me.

Batman and Bruiser, in reference to the BLNR, are the worst to my ears.

The rest I can pretty much handle.

I don't know the reasons.

I am surprised at all the hate for the nicknames. People Name all kinds of stuff like their cars, their kitchen appliances, etc. It Shows affection, it makes a relatively cold reference number (which some can't remember if their life depended on it) so much more affectionate and personal.

Granted, some nicknames are plain bad. Bruiser, really? But I personally really like Batman. First of I find it describes it well and secondly Batman is a superhero that is considered cool by most people, so why not?

Also, the Pepsi (which should be Pan Am, really, but the Pepsi brand is more ubiqutous than Pan Am, for which the watch was originally designed, as I understand it) and Coke just seem to fit so well.

The issue in the end is probably that someone who doesn't know what a Rolex Batman is, also doesn't know what a Rolex referncey XYZ is and vice versa. So it all stays in the community either way.

Like it or not, it I think Hulk and Smurf are here to stay! To be honest I don't mind them. Batman and Bruiser don't sit right with me for some reason.
