(Baselworld) Flops or Misses in recent history?
Seeing as Basel is right around the corner, it'd be interesting to see what folks may qualify as a flop or a miss from Rolex in recent years.
I know there will always be a few folks that may vigorously defend a watch that they enjoy, but i'd like to hear what you think Rolex would like a chance to do-over (so to speak). I'd pick the new Air King. Dial has too much going on and to me is a model that should have retained the feel of air-kings in past... |

I don't know about flops or anything, as I think every Rolex finds a market.
One thing for CERTAIN is that after Basel, there will be lots of moaning and groaning, but, in a few months time, most models will generate positive excitement. |

Just like apple products, even if they introduce crap or make horrible changes to good things, there will always be buyers.
To be fair I don't think Rolex released too much crap in the last few years. AK is not too bad. I don't like the cyclops in the sd43 or the DJ 41 jubilee folding clasp though(should be hidden clasp like 36 jubilee version) |

It is always like that, even with the now so popular 116610LV

I think the title “Basel Releases You Didn’t Like” would have been more apt.
By and large this will become an unpopularity contest. I do understand the OP’s point about the new AK dial design but others may like it. It’s just a new dial. But what about the larger case, the bracelet or the clasp? What metric to use? Flops or Misses are typically measured by slumping sales numbers or poor design or other defect in execution. Since we don’t have sales numbers from Rolex, hard to say... If you use a metric like heavily discounted and plentiful BNIB stickered models in the secondary channels, then you might say the 116506. But most people would tell you it’s a beautiful watch - with which I’d agree. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Not Basel related, but the Daytona was a poor seller for years. Yes, it is true, the mighty Daytona did not sell well all the way through the 80's. Many think Rolex only kept it in the lineup to have a Chrono on board. My watch Guru buddy who has long ago passed away, bought a Sub in 1973 and they "threw in" a Daytona for $100. True story, I saw the receipt. So we never really know or can predict what watches will be popular or trendy even if they are not at first release.
If I remember, the 116610LV did not get a lot of hype and action when first released, but is really hot now. Certainly not a flop but also nothing like the demand for the Daytona 116500 or 126600.

That’s true of course about the Daytona - and your friend’s story is a great example. Even back then you had to buy two! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

DDII and DJII both ended up being discontinued pretty quickly. I understand as I think the proportions were just not quite right. I wonder if they redesign the sub if people will say the same things about the super case? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I guess on would have to add the 116600 to the list. The SD4K didn't last long. Also one of my favorites. |

ADs doubling up as DJ41 warehouses nowadays would say even that change was unneeded.

The AK is doing what it was intended for, a heavy Explorer 1. It is filling a small niche without hurting sales of other sports models much. I like it, it is one my wrist now.
