Narrowing down a GMT.....choices

Looking at a couple pre-C Pepsi GMT’s.

Any opinions or preferences from GMT fans on either?

*price not an issue (both are very close)

*functionality not an issue

*collectability not a consideration.... either would be enjoyed and worn. Resale $’s not a factor.

* Both from very trusted TRF sellers (wouldn’t buy anywhere else) authenticity not an issue.

1. 16700 E serial...All original...2018 RSC serviced, therefore complete set now.

At service...1. Clean case 2. Clean bracelet 3. Replace insert and crown 4. Movement service

2. 16710 A serial...All original...Independent movement service done. Case, basically untouched, maybe polished once. Original insert, very faded on the red portion, slightly faded on the blue. Watch and box only.

Thank as always *Pics from sellers*

16710 for me Richard.

I'd pop in a new insert (keeping the old one of course)

And then I'd ship it off to LAWW fro a complete and "in keeping" case refinishing to original specs. Looks good and thick and will come back indistinguishable from new.

Why?

1) I much prefer the SEL bracelets. Coupled with a lug hole case and you've got perfection.

2) I think faded inserts on 5 digit cases look, well, a bit crap

3) Its to be enjoyed and worn, and resale not an issue for you so it should look its best

There is no straight right answer here. But I will suggest the 16700 for the extra RSC document and also quick set date feature, which made the date changing much easier.

I'd go for the 16700 because after owning both I realized that I found the user friendly date change of the 16700 far more useful in my rotation than the 16710's 3rd time zone capabilities.

Also, I am in the minority in this but I do not like SEL's since I feel that the original folded EL flow better on the wrist, and that the little spring bars that hold the last link to the EL is a weak point on the SEL's.

Add in the fact that the 16700 just had a RSC service and you have a winner for me.

Best of luck in your decision and you really cant go wrong with either...Also, I really like the direction you have taken with your collection. It is very well rounded

I think I would also opt for the 16710.....on the basis that I could send to RSC (or another trusted watchmaker.....you have lots of options in the US) for refurbishment/new bezel etc. You can easily pull together a box set if you feel the need and the service papers will be a nice addition. If you can then suggest you try them on to see which you prefer.....based on my experience the 16700 is a nicer watch to wear. Good luck.

From those 2 would pick the 16700 with RSC service and full paperwork

For me the 16700 is the preferred watch due to the quick set date function. I've got no need for three time zones in my life.

The two were made concurrently with the 16710 outliving it's sibling. I believe the 16710 is the more popular but I doubt it has the newer movement in this case. The new movement increase the allure for the 16710. Also it's an incomplete set where as the 16700 has at least a recent warranty card. I like the bezel on the 16700 better; on the other hand a new bezel isn't particularly expensive in the scheme of thing. I guess there are plusses and minuses for both. Choose your poison!!!

Here's the time line for the GMTs.

What he said.
And the time zone capabilities is a must on a GMT.

Isn't that the purpose of the bezel? It's not a dive watch after all.

Yes but as the poster said above, I prefer the GMT hand setting vs a quick set date.
Time setting is a more convenient feature in a GMT watch than a quick set date for me.

Having both myself, the 16700 for the quick set date and the tritium dial. The RSC papers are an added bonus.

16710 for me mate. Recent service is a plus and prefer the newer yet still aged looking bezel. Looks a cracker and is making me miss mine.

I also prefer the 16710 for the jumping hour hand which for me defines what a gmt should do.

Horses for courses as ever.

All excellent points gentlemen, thank you for the advice. It seems kind of odd to me… Now that the 16700 has had service, and a new insert, it looks like the old insert goes together with that piece, more than the other way around :)

i don't know what kind of deal you'd be getting on either of these, but for what it's worth takuya has an unpolished D Serial Pepsi, complete set that looks amazing. I don't know if you prefer the lug holes or not, but aside from that I'd scoop that piece up.

Between the two models, nearly identical in appearance, I’d choose the 16710. I like quick set hour hand feature. And as has been said before, I like what I’ve got. Like you, resale/collectibility is not a consideration for me. I plan to wear my GMT daily and enjoy the heck out of it. :)

So I’ve got four of these, all 16710’s. Three are no holes case, one is a holes case.

The SEL of the 16710, combined with the drilled lug holes and luminova dial is the sweet spot of this reference for many. Therefore I’d go for the 16710 personally, but I’m a bit biased. I’d also have it serviced sooner rather than later. If for no other reason that you will then become the registered owner as far as Rolex are concerned.

I honestly believe the 16710 is the best watch ever made.

I wouldn’t let the condition of the insert be a deciding factor at all. Personally I think faded bezels look crap anyway and I’ve had all mine serviced and the insert replaced anyway.
