EXP2 value on the rise? EXP1 to EXP2

I have the itch to swap my 14270 for a tritium dual Explorer II 16570.

Seems like these things are rising in value, last summer they were averaging about $4,500.

It feels like my 14270 doesn’t make the cut anymore, I actually enjoy having a date on my watches now. Anyone else?

16570s are slowly creeping up in value, especially the polar versions. I would go for it since it sounds like you aren't getting full enjoyment out of your Exp1 anymore.

Tell yourself the date every morning when you wake up and you won't need a date on your watch.

If you said that you wanted a GMT movement then I'd say the swap is reasonable. I'd make the swap for that reason but not the date. I prefer clean crystals whenever possible.

If possible, add rather than replace.

I think that's a great watch Explorer 1. Iconic. I wouldn't trade it away on speculation that the ex2 is gonna rocket in value.

GMT function is a +20 cool points as I’m overseas at least once per year but not an ABSOLUTE necessity.

16700/16710’s are absolutely out of my price range. Would kill for a 1675.

The new Tudor GMT doesn’t appeal to me, 41mm case without drilled lugs and the snowflake hands with round markers are total downers.

The 1675 would get old if you're particular about how the time is set on your watch. The lack of quickset date means you're messing with the time every other month.

An Explorer II could make a lot of sense. I personally wouldn't buy one exclusively for the date but would buy one for the GMT function. I still wouldn't sell the Explorer unless you're a one-watch guy. The grass seems greener now but you might wish you kept the old one after the excitement wears down.

the fact that you can have both for the price of one gmt2 is rather amazing all things considered.

It would seem that most Rolex SS sport models are inching upward. I’m somewhat shocked that the new Exp II’s are sitting in the case when the ceramic GMT II’s are selling for a premium.

Wow, that Explorer looks great! Who cars about value? Just wear a watch you like.

I used to wear the 16570. It's a fantastic watch, and, like you say, the main reason I picked it over the 14270/114270 was the date feature.

However, even though the 16570 is small for the professional series, I still missed the litheness of my old DJ. 36mm stays out of the way and really feels more "sporty" to me, because I can actually play sports with it on without noticing it.

You might want to look at one of the DJs on the sportier end of the spectrum. Thanks to Adam, I ended up on something unusual that's still 36mm, but also super functional:

I think the 16570 is one of the last true bargains to get before they start skyrocketing in cost like the other 5 digit references. It's on my radar for sure, the only thing that holds me back is I feel the bezel would be a scratch magnet.

Yeah, that was the whole point. It's a bezel that gets dinged up, but doesn't break.

I actually think the bezel adds more character to the watch and is a huge part of the ruggedness appeal for me on the 16570.

I didn’t mention rising value to infer that I’m chasing it to resell later on. It’s more of a complaint on how expensive they’ve become within the last year! Same goes for a 14060.

Current pricing has shown the bandwagoners are jumping on the 16570 Ex2s as the "underpriced bargain"

It's pretty funny how some people mocked the Explorer 2, including some of the grey dealers. One of them replied to my email inquiry, telling me that they would NEVER EVER buy the 16570. This was just two years ago, when you couldn't even give away the 16570s.

Now....the same grey dealers who said never....is buying and selling the 16570s...

I own both an Exp I (albeit 39mm) and an Exp II. I can honestly say you can't go wrong with either. They even make a fantastic pair!

I love the exp 2. Because of my work I do use the date function often and find myself looking at my watch for it many times. I tend to wear my Daytona and speedy on weekends as I tend not to need the date then. This rotation allows me to have date and non date watches without problem.

The 14270/114270 is one of the best-wearing watches Rolex makes, IMO. Extremely legible, smaller but still with a nice wrist presence, can be worn seamlessly on a NATO as showing in the OP, lightweight, and looks good in virtually every occasion -- I'd hang onto it OP, unless you really want a date feature and are tired of it. It's an incredible watch.

Keep it. Looks great on your wrist. And, I too think the Explorer II is so different from the One that you could own both and have a totally different, but very cool look, whichever one you wear.
