Hublot vs Rolex

Hi all,

Again, i am new, very new, to the watch world. Recently got my Sub C as the first Rolex. Now i am having my eyes on Hublot. I think it's very unique. What are your opinions on the brand, quality, value of Hublot vs Rolex?

Thank you for your input

While I am not as new to the watch world, I haven't owned a Hublot. I am curious about them too. They don't hold their value nearly as well as Rolex, so I'd definitely buy pre-owned. Even then, because Hublot continuously comes out with new styles and the brand itself is rather new, longer term you are likely to lose value (even buying pre-owned) as the specific model or possibly the whole brand declines in demand (case in point, Franck Muller).

Hublot to me makes sense for their more fashion-forward pieces with interesting materials and bolder colors, which are an anti-dote to Rolex's classical styles. The tamer-looking Hublots are actually rather boring in person, in my opinion at least. If you want bold and colorful, AP can be a more upscale alternative.

if you think its unique, might i point you to the other watch brands Hublot is based on

Here is a clue... Hublot is french for "porthole" so can you think of any brands using the porthole theme even before Hublot as a company even existed?

Id stick to Rolex personally and look into other brands as you become for comfortable in the watch world. You cant go wrong with Rolex, however there are other brands that might be a mistake in retrospect.

Rolex is the more classic and conservative looking choice. It is the undisputed king in resale. Rolex is also the blue chip brand. Sometimes you need more unconventional looking watches to go along with your classic looking watches. I personally perfer Panerai for that choice but I can see Hublot fitting that niche as well. Hublot is all over the place with new models and looks so there is significantly more risk and potential loss in resale because how they design their watches. Another unique looking watch I have found to wear a lot is Bell & Ross. Their square military cockpit theme has a ultimate guy’s watch look. Their BR03-92 Military Ceramic is the ultimate guy’s black watch as it doesn’t scratch or show age. I beat the crap out of mine and it still looks flawlessly new. Long story short, of your looking for a more unconventional looking automatic there are some interesting choices.

I bought my hublot when i didn’t know anything about watches and movements , i liked the look of it and it is very nice but the clasp is not comfortable
Rolex makes the most comfortable bracelets and you feel the quality of the watch and it doesn’t gets old

Hublot gets a lot of hate on the forums and I don't think all of it is deserved. There are a lot of watches inspired by the Royal Oak design and the Hublots are different enough, in my opinion. Hublots marketing decisions turn off a lot of traditional watch lovers and they are way overpriced. But they do some great things in terms of materials and some of their higher end movements are interesting. If you like one of their watches and can buy at a big discount, then I say go for it.

Also not a fan of Hublot, but no hater either! If you do buy, go second hand as the others have mentioned. Otherwise you'll take a huge hit. Unless you have f*** OFF money, in which case get whatever you want whenever you want!

Unique is the last word I'd use to describe Hublot! But that was then, and now I guess they are being more innovative with materials and designs. I would only buy used or with a 30-40% discount, and go for the less outrageous designs, such as Classic Fusion.

I’m not a fan, I see them more as a fashion brand. Nothing they make really interest me.

There is nothing about Hublot that I care for. We have a Hublot store in Orlando that I'll look in the window from time to time. Hideous looking and hideously priced. IMO.

I have to agree. I stopped in a store last week that had them (also Orlando). Tried on a couple and found them to appear gaudy and cheap.

It's your money. Buy what you want ...

I don't like Hublot but it isn't because there is anything wrong with them. There's just other stuff that is much more appealing to me.

If you do buy, get used!

Not a fan of Hublot.. like Mystro said above, there are plenty of other comparably different brands, that in my opinion offer better value and heritage for the bang (no pun intended)

For me its the lack of history/heritage, plus a high novelty factor that keeps me away

I own both, few Rolexes and few Hublots, when it comes to quality both brands have a very good quality build. What’s surprising, when I wear Hublot I feel like I’m not wearing anything at all. It’s so light even though it doesn’t look like it. Some people like that, I for example like heavy watches. When it comes to brand, both recognizable enough. People, who are not even into watches will recognize either brand right away. If you going after that then both brands have precense. When it comes to value, all my Rolex peices either went up in value or stayed the same, Hublot for example, Blue Fusion Chronograph lost $1500 in valie since I purchsed it. Rolex always wins in resale value war.

If you want differentiate your collection, then of course get Hublot, it will add to it. If you don’t care about collecting, then stick to Rolex , there are so many ways you can go within this brand.

Actually Hublot is credited with having the idea of a luxury watch on a rubber strap many years ago. Rolex finally added the “Oysterflex” just recently, just sayin’
I bought one of the first SS/ceramic Big Bangs circa 2008 when they were very hard to get. Jean-Claude Biver was CEO then and actually posted on the Timezone forum back then. If you posted up an incoming back then he would send you a personally signed warranty extension, can you imagine the Chairman of Rolex doing that?
Biver is gone now though, they make too many limited editions, and resale stinks...but it is a modern alternative that isn’t afraid to try new things.

If you are buying with the notion that you may resell in the future, buy second hand.
