Smaller steel sports.. will it happen again?
Rolex has been making their watches bigger and flashier over the years. New subs, while still 40mm, wear bigger. Explorer 2 is now 42mm. Explorer 1 is now 39mm.
Will we ever see these go back to a more classic size? And also, will we ever see a return to a less flashy presentation, or is this now reserved for Tudor? What are your opinions? |

Classic sized watches haven’t gone anywhere. I’m assuming you’re referring to 34-36mm dials. Right now they may not be as popular but for a dress watch, it’s a preference chosen by many especially vintage watch collectors. |

I would say no as people are much bigger now a days bigger wrists but you never know. I wouldn't want anything smaller than a 39.

I prefer a classic sized and proportioned watch. The pie pans folks flash on their wrists often look like Wonder Woman's bracelets to me.

I believe i read somewhere that 80% of men have a wristsize between 6.5 and 7.5. So 40mm is the sweetspot i guess. The explorer 39 and new Pepsi wear perfect on my 7' wrist. Wouldnt want any bigger or smaller. Personaly i think to many guys wear watches that are clearly to big. Go over to the AP section and you see 44 ROO's on 6.5 wrists which just looks comicial. Nothing wrong with big (sport) watches if you are a big guy. Nothing wrong with 34mm eather if you have a smaller wrist. Enough options out there for everyone.

I wish. 36mm is perfect for some models but classed as 'retro' now. Apparently because 40mm versions are available now. How silly.

I agree. A 38mm GMT would be a fantastic idea. A 38mm coke gmt from Tudor could be a nice example. Without date, of course.

Rolex was always a tad large for sports watches, very briefly market size and now they are relatively under-sized. So, no, I don’t see them going smaller.

I think to call anything a trend beyond what is originally produced is probably too simplistic. Larger watches are here to stay for some people just like smaller watches are here to stay for others. I have watches on the smaller end, Rolex Daytona and a Tudor Ranger, and two 47 mm Panerai's. Depending on what I want to wear and what I am doing I am just as comfortable in either. Wear one for a day or two and it is the norm for me. The journey for me is deciding what I like and how it wears.

I've been looking for a Datejust 41 (oyster bracelet, rhodium stick dial) but yesterday I tried on a Datejust 36 and was surprised at how proportional it looked on my wrist.

42mm is the perfect size for me. My only ‘must haves’ are Explorer II and Sky-D. The wife has 36-40mm and wears a BLNR daily.

I wish all manufacturers would also list lug-to-lug size and height on their websites, as to me these are as important than the standard size listed.

I was thinking the other night about how well Rolex handled the larger watch craze that hit ~10 years ago. They have the market the skydweller and seadweller references for those wanting larger watches. The rest of us stayed at 40mm. They plumped up the super case to give everyone a bit more beef, but also left the Daytona and other cases in their original cases.... something for everyone if you ask me.

I just went from a subc to a 36mm Explorer as my daily. I like the smaller size. 40mm is the most I consider.
