Lineup change scenarios

Hypothetically, if you had this lineup:

Would you trade the SD4K OR the two explorers (16570 and 114270) towards either of the following?

RG YM on Oysterflex

Patek 5296g-001

Thought process being to add a piece that will dress up a bit more but is versatile enough to be an everyday wear and to keep my collection to a manageable amount so each get ample wear (so “keep the current three” is an acceptable response but no “keep them and add” for this exercise please). Also I know that it’s ultimately what I like best that matters, this is just to get different perspectives as data points. Thanks!

I'd have no problem selling both Explorers and adding the RG YM.

Four words to live by.....never sell a Rolex. I say no, you have a very sharp trio.

I’d keep the polar and add the YM.

And for the record, in this scenario, I would keep either the SD4K or both Explorers.

Do you need waterproof up to 3900 meters? If not, sell the SD4K for the RG Yachtmaster. The Explorer can more than handle a dressy occasion when that Patek is called for.

That’s a good point. I honestly think the SD4K is the best modern diver in terms of balance between engineering, heritage and aesthetics, but then I think about the fact that I am not a diver.....

Hmmm this is tough...I think the Explorer 1 can dress up nicely actually...will. Red to think about this one.

116655 is a stunner. I would trade SS for gold all day, every day.

Yeah but you’re (presumably) not a polar explorer either. The argument against owning an extreme dive watch applies to the Sub too since nobody dives to 300m...

The question I’d ask myself is “how much wear will the Patek get”? However versatile it is, it’s less rugged than a sports watch, will cost more to service than your other options and is on leather (i.e. don’t get it wet). I’ve got a few dress watches, all of which I like, but I wear them infrequently which is why I’d never spend Rolex PM/PP money on one.

In your shoes, the Explorers would be gone in a heartbeat with the YM in. That reference is one of the nicest looking PM pieces Rolex makes.

I fully sympathise with this scenario having owned all three models you currently have. Still have the SD4K and Explorer II, they have a "permanent" place in my collection.

Would it be better to have only SD4K or Exp II and I?
I'd say SD4K is a much more complete watch and has a lot going for it; modern super diver with all the upgrades and imao a nicer case than subs, probably also 'collectible' being a short run. Although I think the Exp I works very well in more dressy situations (worn mine to interviews and weddings) it's no dress watch.

YM RG or Patek 5296 for dressy situations and everyday?
I'd definitely go Calatrava here (but 5127G probably). I would not chose the sector dial variant but if you do it makes it more versatile so good thinking there. The YM is no dress watch, people swear by it and George Soros wore it, but rubber and suit is not a great combination. You would be much better off with the Patek here. The picture you posted shows the versatility of sector dial version.

The Patek Calatrava and Rolex SD4K are two watches that you can keep forever and never feel that you have to 'upgrade'. Later on you can add the YM RG OF, if you still desire it, to get some variation.

Another vote for keeping the SD and trading the explorers for the PP. Not a fan of that YM at all.

I wouldn’t wear that YM if someone gave it to me. Dead serious. I would keep what you’ve got....it’s a great trio.

Not sure how I feel, regarding this decision, about the breaking rumors of Patek potentially being up for sale. Part of the value proposition of Patek is the independence and consistency. Thoughts?

The Patek gives you the dressier option vs the YM. I’d flip one if the explorers, keep the other and the Sd4l, and save to buy the Patek.

If you want a PM or PP, you might just need to scratch the itch, but out of the two scenarios, I think you should keep what you have.

I think the Exp 36mm can handle most dress situations, unless it’s very formal, in which case you can put a strap on it.

i would move the explorer I

and the SD and Exp II would stay put.

when i say i would, i mean that is pretty much exactly what i did except in place of the SD (really a favorite) i have a 14060m with the Exp II.

the longer i rotate these two in the more i know that they are irreplaceable in my collection... again the 14060 could easily have been the 116600.
