What does “MK” mean when talking about different dials?

I know it is about different dial variations, such as MK1 and MK2, but what do the letters actually stand for?

Make?

Mark. No clue who made up the moniker but it really is used in vintage or non production models more than modern pieces. Espeically to distinguish value due to variations.

MK or Mark is also very common in referring to different revisions of weapons in the US military. Feels like it’s a common way to refer to revisions of heavily engineered products that have smaller incremental changes.

Mark is derived from a reference to a physical ‘mark’ on the modification plate of a system, component or machine. Modification plates are used to identify which modifications have already been applied etc....in this case watch dials...
