Asking for opinions, is this dial tropical or badly damaged?

A dealer would say tropical. Most right minded people would say damaged.

There is nothing tropical about that damaged dial.

Here is what a tropical dial looks like. My old Mk2 next to my old Mk3.

Well I guess it's settled. Yup, it was a dealer who called it tropical, I thought I was missing something for thinking it's closer to being totally destroyed.

Looks to have spent some time in the toaster oven after water damage.

That's a VERY rare Chicken Pox dial, far more rare than the Falling Leaf dial, or Stardust dial.

5512: Tropical or badly damaged?
Quote:
Maybe both - the telltale blackening in the lume says moisture got inside for some period. Then owner may have overdone the oven drying process. And the hands were not original as well. Evidenced by the lack of black spots in their lume. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

To be clear, any change over time is "damage" as none of the changes were intended by Rolex. Like a suntan versus a sunburn, the key is how much damage there is. A little is often seen as a good thing, a lot is bad. That is a lot.

It looks like someone pulled the dial and hands out from underneath an outhouse.

no, not tropical (as everyone already said), but better than service or aftermarket.

everything depends on the price .... meters first 200m dials in any condition are rare. so if the serial calls for this dial, it'll take you many years and many $1000s to find a better one.
