Rolex and James Bond

Been thinking about Rolex and James Bond. The first super agent put the submariner in the public eye. Great product placement by Rolex. They got Hillary on the Everest summit and in the years that followed they got Cousteau, Jackie Stewart and Paul Newman, James Cameron.

Omega spent a fortune catching up and the NASA moon series was a coup for them while Bond moved on to some sad times even sporting a digital Casio.

Then comes the new Daniel Craig series. I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing there was a hefty bidding war between Rolex and Omega to be on the wrist of the new 007. In Casino Royale, great attention is drawn to the watch in the scene on the train between Vesper and Bond in an overly gratuitous product placement. But even then, it must have killed the execs at Omega when Vesper’s first guess on his watch is “Rolex?”. When he replies “Omeeega” and she’s says it’s beautiful, we all know they both wanted it to have a coronet.

"Rolex?", Bond replies "Omeeega", both then share an awkward sigh of disappointment.

I'd much rather get Rolex on the wrist of the new 007 then spend a $.01 on that Woods clown.

Omega, or “Omeega”, actually appeared in the Pierce Brosnan movies. “Goldeneye” was the first, if I recall.

I really don’t get what Rolex lovers get out of dissing or putting down Omega. They are making some great timepieces right now. As are Rolex.

Both great “houses” to purchase from, IMHO.

It's all in good fun, but the 007 product placement is very gimmicky. I am glad Omega is moving to a lot more in-house movements.

Don’t believe Rolex did bid for the Bond gig (ever) and certainly don't compete for it with Omega.

The Omega / Rolex line was prob requested by Omega in Casino Royale. I believe it is supposed to highlight that the worlds best secret agent prefers to wear Omega. It’s a cringeworthy bit of ‘forced’ dialogue to a great film!!!!!

Actually, in all the movies, Bond wore whatever Q branch gave him.

Don't think so.

Omega was the choice of the custome-set designer when the series rebooted with Brosnan. It was an intentional choice. Not a bidding war. Rolex was viewed as overplayed and passé and too common of a choice. The QP was "what would the modern European man of adventure choose? The consensus was Omega.

Omega has been on a Bond wrist since 1995, and Rolex never paid for product placement unlike Omega has, so I find it highly unlikely there was any bidding war between them when DC took up the role.

Right...much rather spend it on a fictional character that has long since gone to the highest marketing bidder, rather than a real person with real accomplishments...

Really says it all about where we are today! Lol

. . .
There is plenty of information in our Reference Library.

Rolex never placed, or bid on product placement, in any Bond film. Omega though, did purchase their place in the movies.

Makes sense, they probably would have paid to have the rotating bezel saw be another brand, lol

Yes, pretty much that.....
I watched a documentary, aways back, about the "re-boot" of the J.B movie franchise. The costume dept. lady insisted that he wore an Omega. The reasoning behind this, as she explained, was that when she was a young girl growing up in Hong Kong, I think she said HK, her father was a Royal Air Force Pilot and she distinctly remembers all of her father's friends and colleagues wearing Omega watches. Despite what Ian Fleming had originally said, "He could not just wear a watch, it had to a Rolex".
Personally I think that they should've stuck with Rolex the Omega's that followed, after Pierce Brosnan was seen wearing one, were a little tacky, IMHO, i.e. the placing of 007 on the second hand, or emblazoned across the dial.
Omega make some terrific watches, but I feel that they tried a little too hard with the earlier JB franchise watches.

Well, if your talking about real accomplishments, I think Omega has Rolex firmly under their boot, ala, the moon.

Climbing a mountain or running circles around a race track-doesn't quite add up to the same gravitas.

One clown at a time. First let's figure out why you named yourself after a cigarette brand and chose their graphic for your avatar.

First water resistant case, GMT, perpetual rotor. Rolex trumps Omega with regards to watchmaking achievements.

Same reason you use Frank Sinatra as an avatar.

Marlboro made some of the best vocal recordings in the history of popular music?

Nice for her that she has that personal memory, nothing wrong with it but that is a weak reason IMO to cut a decades old thread and subvert the intention of the creator, for something as irrelevant as a personal memory

And her memory no doubt jogged by the money that Omega paid them too! Business is business.

Indeed, if it’s some sort of justification story after the fact that makes a whole lot more sense to me, but what do I know...

IIRC in the 90s there was great fanfare to BMWs product placement in the new Bond relaunch, to the dismay of our British friends.
