Datejust Q

My husband is not much of a watch person, but there is one Rolex he loves.

It's a Datejust in white gold with a dark blue leather (or alligator?) strap and dark blue dial.

Unfortunately, it's $18,000 at my AD

Does anyone know if this model would be possible in steel?

Hi Jen,

IMO any SS DJ would look great on the same strap and you can get these straps lots of places. Most of the SS DJ's have the white gold bezel anyway so you get the warmth of the white gold to an extent.

This one would look great on a blue alligator strap.

This one might look nice:

You may already know about the links above, but thought them worth mentioning.

I have used panatime several times and they are great.

Richard - is the case alone what makes the white gold one SO expensive? Thanks for the links - I'll check them out - I think that is the same dial he likes!

Yes! The movements should be identical. The dials should be also, but I will defer to others here that are far more knowledgeable than I.

I would never buy the white gold in any watch except the Daytona and that alone for the red hands or the meteor dial.

Good luck Jen. Your husband will adore you for it!

Jen,

I can't tell the difference between the SS with the WG bezel and the WG model from the photos. Just the lighting is different.

I think the SS / WG bezel model is very close. The aftermarket band looks close also. The dials are identical I am 99% sure.

When I was shopping for my SD, I was also looking at some DJ's.

The WG fluted bezel had that little bit more shine and sparkle compared to the SS case or other SS bezels. Very subtle, but WG's shine is definitely superior IMHO. But honestly in the real world, this is not noticeable.

If you are looking at the stainless steel DJ 116234 then the bezel is all white gold - but obviously not the case. It sparkles beautifully. I am sure you can order the 116234 with the blue dial (DJ's come with a huge choice of dials) - then fit a Rolex or aftermarket leather strap and - BINGO ! You should have a DJ that looks as beautiful as the one in the pic for half the cost.

If you want a Rolex leather strap fitted you may find that an AD or Rolex Service Centre will refuse to supply and fit it for you. They won't fit something if it does not come as standard with your dial or case choice. You may have to go non-Rolex or through a grey dealer for the strap.

You could get him the SS DJ and I bet Steve Mulholland could get you the Rolex strap/buckle combo

Jen, the Rolex straps have the metal endlinks that cover the "gap" between the strap and case and only come with the gold clasps so they are rather pricey. One alternative is the Leonardo strap by Hirsch which has curved ends and 4 different positions for the springbars to eliminate that gap. Here's a link. http://www.fredawatchstraps.com/hirsch.html

I think steel with a wg bezel and blue strap would look dynamite

In fact, I used to wear just such a watch, only in vintage form. Sadly, this one was sold to help fund my current 116234.

A couple of pics of my 116234 SS w/WG Bezel on a Leonardo strap (brown) and a regular strap (black) . You can see how closer to the case the Leonardo fits. Makes for a much nicer appearance.

There a suppliers out there that will make you a strap in the exact size, color and finish you want. Like this one but I'm sure there are others:

The one other difference--if it matters to him--is that you would want to get an aftermarket deployant clasp should you go with the 116234 (SS/WG bezel) and add a strap. The white gold DJ comes with a Rolex WG deployant clasp.
